Mike had been enjoying some vegetables when it happened. He didn't admit he enjoyed them but anyone smart enough to see beyond his feigned disgust at having to eat his veggies, they could tell. The chaos that erupted had sent peas and carrots flung in every direction and him reaching for the epi-pen in his backpack he wasn't sure if he actually needed it. He had some allergies but bees and wasps were a big question mark because his mother made sure that if there was a hive or nest of any kind within 5 miles of him at any time, it ended up destroyed.
He didn't get to it though because the wasps were attacking and then he saw Derrick collapse. It didn't take long for mike to figure out that he wasn't the one with the allergy—it was Derrick. Fear grasped him and he managed to get the attention of a teacher who quickly got him out of the furious storm.
By the time he got out, he was bent over and taking in deep breaths. He was checked on by one of the other students, who started seeing to his stings. Mike started in the direction of the infirmary as soon as he could but was instructed to come back later to check on Derrick, when the infirmary wasn't quite so overloaded with students who needed attention.
