Just Before Sunrise - Nick, Sorin, & Tanek
Tanek had spent all day hemming and hawing about whether or not he should stay at the school. He wanted to see Sorin, no, he didn't. He wanted to celebrate, no, he wanted to go somewhere far away and pretend none of this existed. He wanted to run and hide, he wanted to dance and rejoice that he could still have a sliver of Sorin.
In the end, he couldn't leave. When sundown came, he even hid near the graveyard, together with a full bottle of vodka. Perhaps he would greet Sorin as he emerged from the graveyard, cheer him up. But when Sorin appeared, he was with Valentin and Dane, and he was laughing.
Something inside of him broke at that - Tanek could have sworn he had felt it, lurching in his stomach - and he ran. And he drunk the entire bottle in one go.
After that, things went fuzzy.
At some point, a few hours later, he had felt sort of lucid again. Tanek realized he had stolen someone's coat and that he was in the woods. As if on instinct, he went to the place he associated with Sorin more than with someone else, and there, he lied down on the autumn leaves.
He had been half-dozing, his cheeks wet with tears, when he heard Sorin's voice. He scrambled to his feet, for a moment at a loss for words. Then, a half-explanation, half-accusation: "You were happy."
