Thread: Polar Bear Dive!
WHO: Errbawdy!
WHEN: Saturday, March 18
WHERE: The Lake in the Woods
OOC: Dive Count Reference
The Polar Bear Fundraiser didn't make quite as much as it had the previous year, but any money that went to The Bleeding Heart Animal Centre was put to good use. They accepted the donation happily, expressing gratitude for what the students provided. The animals would be well taken care of and the extra money was always more than what they would typically expect. Many of the students regularly volunteered at the shelter as it was, so this kind gesture was merely the icing on the generosity cake. Lots of people lent a hand with advertising heralded by the house mentors and then money collection and tracking done by Victoria. Students who were supposed to dive or just wanted to watch gathered at the lake. Not everyone came and quite a few refused to come at all and if they had dives, the school made up the cost for them. But there was still a large crowd and the area was set up much like it had been the previous year with warded areas that served as little pockets of summer, thanks to the magic-using staff members, and plenty of hot chocolate to warm the bodies that needed it or sate a thirst for something tasty. Students stored items in cubbies to keep their things dry, plenty of warmed blankets were readily available, and Mr. Pheres made sure all those who jumped didn't start showing signs of hypothermia or those that had accidents from trips and falls and close encounters with rocks. Pretty much all staff were present and accounted for at the event. The shouts and screams of students jumping into the cold water filled the air, and the warmer turn the weather took made it a less miserable experience. The occasional sprinkle of rain with some wind, it was obvious everyone was having fun. The cloudy sky wouldn't dampen their spirits and everything would proceed as usual. After today, the students would begin spring break which the groundhog predicted may actually be spring-like this time. Some were doubtful of the meteorologically gifted animal, but others hoped it would be the case. Mother Nature appeared to be somewhat temperamental this year, so they crossed their fingers the warmer weather would remain. Victoria had her iPad with the chart of all the dives on it. She kept track of how many jumps too place and when students started refusing to do more, she took note of it for the school to look at later and likely provide an additional, although smaller, donation to the shelter to make up for it. She kept a safe distance from the lake, not needing to stand in the summer and even if it was cloudy, she kept to the shade of an umbrella where many of the vampires ended up hanging around in order to avoid too much exposure to the sun. |
