The police had gone. The school would look into it further. The school had a comfortable relationship with the local police, a few of them witches or weres or the like. They knew that the school was special and a few may have attended at some point. The school would look into matters, and hopefully get this figured out quickly. And also handled. Jae now sat in Dr. Hallowfen's office, showing signs of anxiety that began to appear when she admitted she didn't have an alibi for the night of both murders. The signature was a little too clear. Hearts and livers taken and now the pendant belonging to her found near the body that another student found . . . "Jae," Dr. Hallowfen said gently, "I need you to tell me what happened on those nights. Whatever you can remember." Jae cradled the tea in her hands. It was meant to calm her, and she could taste the herbs that her Head of House placed in it. Maybe there was magic too, but Jae's nerves were wrought tight. She exhaled slowly. "I . . . the first time, I was getting ready for bed," Jae said after Dr. Hallowfen waited a full minute or two more before the kumiho had the strength to answer, "Everything went gray and then black. I don't remember anything after that." Dr. Hallowfen remained quiet. "I woke up in the woods. By the creek. I was—" embarrassment halted her for a moment, "—naked. I don't know how I got there. I hurried back. I saw the article but I didn't . . . " "You didn't tell anyone," Dr. Hallowfen supplied, and Jae nodded, "I didn't think it was important. I could control my hunger. I knew I could—" a beat, "—I thought I could." "Go on, Jae. Tell me about last month," Dr. Hallowfen continued, not letting Jae dwell on those thoughts. All these answers only brought on more questions and concerns. "It happened again. I wasn't in my room. I was practicing for my audition," Jae explained. The audition coming at the end of the month. Her whole future now thrown into a spiral of uncertainty. "And?" Cressida asked, "Where were you when you woke up?" "In the showers," Jae said even softer than before. She set the cup aside, not taking any more of the tea. Her hands clasped and her knuckles turning white. Something warm dropped onto Jae's knuckles, and she opened her eyes enough to see her vision blurred. She was crying. "There was blood," she choked, "I don't remember, Dr. Hallowfen. I wish I could remember. I don't. I don't know what happened!" Her voice cracked and her bleary eyes faced her Head of House. A warm hand touched hers and Dr. Hallowfen's voice cut in, "Jae, I think, until we figure things out, we need to put you somewhere safe." Jae knew that what Dr. Hallowfen meant was to put Jae somewhere to keep others safe. She gave a trembling nod to her head of house. |
