Narrative: A Dragon Sleeps Tonight
WHO: Ashton, Barclay, Blake, Ryuuko
WHEN: New Year's Eve [Backdated]
WHERE: Courtyard
OOC notes: a. Ashton always makes a scene when he comes to visit. He's a dragon! His entrances must always be grand. Your character, if they're on campus, most likely heard or felt him roar. b. Barclay and Ashton are graduates and not regular characters. They come in for a scene every now and then, as needed or as desired.
It had not quite been a full year since the St. Margaret graduates of 2016 left to branch out into the world, but sometimes Ashton felt like it had been at least a decade. Returning to the school, because of the experiences he had had there and the friends he had made, was always a good feeling.
Christmas had been spent in Barclay's home where the druid's mother had made them a feast. Ashton liked her. Then they spent the day with Barclay's father and his brothers. Ashton didn't like them as much. They judged his Druid too harshly and more often than not, the dragon's hackles were raised as he felt Barclay was being threatened. It never amounted to anything dangerous, however. Ashton was learning still about this type of human family dynamic. They love each other, but they weren't perfect in that love.
After Christmas, Ashton and Barclay set out to St. Margaret's. For what it was worth, for better or worse, Blake Hartley was Ashton's family. Blake's great grandfather had slain Ashton's sire and dam before he hatched. Their blood memory was still in the Dragonslayer's sword and the bearer of that ancient weapon had called a halt to his bloodline of destruction. Ashton was the reason. Blake was his family and now Ryuuko was, too.
Now the slayer taught at St. Margaret's Academy and though Ashton would like to go to his homeland of Iceland and stretch his wings, he was more inclined to check on Blake's progress with Ryu and the school. And to check on his gold too, of course. The secret stash - millions of dollars worth - beneath the castle had better be intact.
Ashton's patience had increased in the months he was away with Barclay in the Amazon. He'd met Ryu previously at Ambriel's disastrous wedding. Though he wouldn't care for the analogy, like an older wolf, Ashton would endure Ryu's jumping at him and nipping at his ears and tail. She was learning her way in the world like he had been. Ashton secretly enjoyed having a little sister. He'd been alone for so long.
As was his custom, Ashton arrived at the Academy under cover of night in his dragon form. The black scales blended with the dark sky as he circled down, Barclay riding on his back. The dragon looked down at the castle and the familiar dorm buildings, rumbling happily. Everything looked peaceful from the sky. Nothing was burning. Nothing had collapsed. Then, taking a breath, Ashton trumpeted their arrival in a brassy dragon roar that rattled windows and set nighttime animals scurrying away. Celebrimbor and Barclay Grisholt were back.
Blake Hartley stood down below in the courtyard with Ryu, watching the sky for their arrival. The dragon's roar would always cause the Dragonslayer's blood to turn to fire in his veins. He squeezed Ryuuko's hand, perhaps to keep the baby dragon calm, or perhaps to ground himself. They waited until the massive black dragon had landed, for Barclay to dismount, and for Ashton to revert to human form before stepping forward to greet them. Blake's smile as he approached was sincere.
"Welcome back."
