Log: Getting To Know You
WHO: Anna & Matt
WHEN: 23 March 2014 [Backdated liek woah]
WHERE: Kitsune Dorms, Anna’s room
Truth or dare. A good little game that was just what Anna wanted to entertain her and distract her from what was bothering her. Not that anything was bothering her, of course, because she was above all of that kind of shit. She didn't care.
She blew out a breath and pushed her fingers through her hair. She had her wings outstretched today, Matt knew her secret and she knew he could be trusted so she didn't mind so much. She'd managed to get a few snacks that were floating around in the common room, including a few that were part of her special diet, grown for her consumption so that she could eat normal food and not exist on skittles and sherbert and purified water as she waited for Matt to arrive.
She had on a pair of yoga pants and a tank top, bare footed and her hair was loose, waves cascading over her shoulders and down her back as she fussed with the last of the things in her room to make sure it was presentable. She'd slowly started getting a collection of plants in her room, either that she had found and wanted to nurture herself or ones that had been given to her because their owners were incapable of keeping them alive. She wanted to eventually have a plethora of living things in her room that she could call her own.
She glanced at her phone, thinking about the challenge she'd been issued about asking Felix who he'd rather hang out with but she figured she had other plans anyway. So what if he did? She was gonna hang out with Matt.
When there was a knock at the door, she put her phone on silent and left it on the bedside table.
"Come in!"
Matt had collected what beers he had left over from underneath his bed and covered them with a jacket so it wasn’t obvious he was carrying alcohol as he moved through the campus. His headache wasn’t as bad as it could have been, but he put that down to the fact he was a werewolf and alcohol didn’t seem to have the same effect on him now as he had when he was human. Hell even if it had it still wouldn’t have stopped him because if you were going to play truth or dare you needed a drink, it was tradition.
Clad in jeans, a dark t-shirt and trainers which had seen better days, Matt had more clothes on today than he had done on Friday evening. Not that he was particularly bothered given that he was comfortable in his own skin even though said skin had been considerably altered when he’d been turned into a wolf.
At Anna’s holler he let himself in, shooting her a grin and depositing the jacket over a nearby chair to reveal the beer. “I hope you were serious about the bring your own beer thing.”
"I'm allergic," Anna offered helpfully, even cheerfully as Matt let himself in. She could see the few bottles he had with him and figured that would be enough to do him for now, and if not, she did have what was left of the alcohol Felix had been trying to drown himself in the first night she'd met him. "So yeah, I was pretty serious."
She pushed her hair back behind her ear and offered her werewolf friend a smile. "Let's get this party started," she grinned and pushed the door shut, engaging the lock with a click. After all, she didn't want them being disturbed or anything. Not if there was going to be any kind of nakedness involved. "Who goes first?"
Matt rested the beer down and then reached into his pocket, pulling out a wallet and delving into it to reveal coin. “I say we flip for it.” He grinned at her as he proceeded to flip the coin. “Call it, Anna.” Whatever she didn’t call he’d take and then they’d see who got to go first.
Anna wrinkled her nose, "Heads," she called, watching the coin flipping and falling into Matt's awaiting hand where it was to be flipped. She hadn't seen the results, so crossed her fingers and waited, head tilted to the side slightly, for his hand to move and reveal the winner.
She was already starting to think of questions she could ask him, figuring they'd get started slowly.
Matt finished up the coin toss and tilted his head, giving a shake of his head. “Looks like I get to go first,” he said with a smirk as he revealed the tails side of the coin. “So, Anna, truth or dare?” He toed off his shoes and made himself comfortable on the edge of her bed, dwarfing it by the sheer size of himself because Matt was far from tiny. And he seemed to get bigger every day be it normal growth or something else.
“We’ll start easy, best way I think.”
Anna let out a soft snort when Matt won the coin toss and just shrugged her shoulders, moving to sit on the bed next to him, on the edge, so her wing tips hung off the end of the bed. "Starting easy's probably a good idea," she agreed with an upward curl of her lips.
"Fine. Hit me with a.... truth."
Truth? Right.
Matt tipped his head and fixed her with those blue eyes of his as he attempted to think of a question that wasn’t too hardcore but at the same time would give an interesting answer. The wolf tucked a leg beneath himself and Matt sat back, arms lifting to brace against the back of the bed as he worked through a million things racing through his head.
“Alright, what embarrassing thing has a parent done to you?”
Well, that could have been worse. They'd always talked about the fact that, if they played this game, they would play it no holds barred, unadulterated truths. And she was willing to play by those preset rules that they'd discussed some time ago.
"Nice and easy to start off with," she agreed with a nod of her head, lacing her fingers together, "My mum accidentally uploaded a whole load of my baby photos onto her website once. And when I say baby photos, I mean naked in the bath, in diapers and so on. The pictures got about two hundred thousand hits before she realised and took them down. I was fifteen at the time, so. That's still kinda raw."
She grimaced at the memory. "You?"
Matt grimaced at the thought of that, especially at the age of fifteen. “Wow, that had to suck.” He shook his head and chuckled. “But funny I have to admit.” He shot her a warm smile to show that he was teasing before he shook his head. “Uh uh, you don’t get to ask me the same question I just asked you that’s against the rules. And besides you don’t know I picked truth now do you?”
He winked and helped himself to a beer.
“But for the record I will take a truth.”
Anna leaned forward, bracing her elbows on her knees, wings fluttering slightly, "Alright," she said, deciding not to take his tease as an insult considering this was Matt and he wouldn't ever be seriously mean to her, "Truth..."
She rolled a couple of questions around in her mind before she said, "So the rules are total honesty, nothing steps outside of this room as far as truths go and we can't ask the same question that's already been asked."
With that, she gave a small grin, "What's the longest time you've ever gone without brushing your teeth?"
“Those are the rules,” Matt agreed. “And I fully intend on upholding them so between, you, me and these four walls nothing’s getting out of here.” And then he waited albeit he lifted an eyebrow at her question, a rough chuckle escaping him a moment later. “Uh, longest time?” He looked up and pursed his lips in thought. “Two days max. I’m kinda anal about that sort of thing. I blame my mother, she was always on us for good oral hygiene.”
He grinned a moment later. “So… truth or dare?”
"Aw, that's nothing, I knew a guy at my old school who used to go for like, weeks without brushing his teeth. His breath coulda knocked out a whole hockey team." Anna grinned and reached out, ruffling Matt's hair affectionately.
She enjoyed games like this, one on one, as it were, quiet and trustworthy, there was no better way to get to know someone.
"I'll go for another truth. I'm working up to the dares."
Matt chuckled and he didn’t bother straightening out his hair, kind of liking the ruffled look that he got when people put their fingers into it. “Okay, another truth.” He had played a lot of these games and as such had a plethora of questions, but Matt also tailored them depending on the person.
“If you only had 24 hours left to live, what would you do?”
"Panic 'cause I'm the only heir to my parents' kingdom?" Anna asked sarcastically before she realised what she'd said and a classic expression of oh shit crossed over her face.
She ducked her head, "Uh- I don't know, to be honest, maybe lose my virginity? Tell the people I care about that I do so that they don't forget? And- if it's going to be a painful death anyway, get drunk."
Matt did something of a double take when Anna basically admitted that she was royalty, fairy royalty to be more exact and he didn’t quite know how to react to that. Especially as it wasn’t every day you met royalty.
“Only heir to their kingdom?” He repeated.
The game of truth and dare forgotten for the time being.
Anna glanced up at Matt, "Out of my deciding to drink myself to death answer to your question you focused on my accidental answer?" She pouted at him and then shifted a little uncomfortably.
"But yeah- my- my parents are- they preside over all of the woods in the continent of North America. They- each wood has its own sort of ruler, but my parents preside over it all. I am the only child they have ever borne so that makes me the only heir, I guess?"
She gave a small, awkward smile.
“Wow,” Matt said looking genuinely surprised and awestruck. “That’s some… family history you have there.” And then there was him, a Riley, not royalty or anything approaching that, but still, his family was good people.
He cleared his throat, took a further sip of his beer and shifted to make himself more comfortable.
“I’ll take another truth.”
Anna frowned a little at the look of awe on Matt's face. She just flushed a little and her wings fluttered. "It- it's not a big deal, but I can't tell anyone. It- it just means I'm different from other fairies but I don't know how. They wouldn't tell me."
She pushed her hair back, "What was the last lie you told?" she asked. “And did you get caught out in it?”
“I’ll keep it to myself,” Matt said without hesitation, appreciating the need for secrets and how everybody was entitled to their own. Of course then she asked that question and Matt dropped his gaze away, fingers taking to picking at the label on his beer. “Last lie I told?” He cleared his throat and took a sip of beer. “I uh told my friends that I was just going away to school for a while, boarding school to be exact. Didn’t tell them I’d changed and that I wasn’t the same because I didn’t know how and I didn’t want them to look at me any differently.”
He shrugged. “And no I have yet to be caught out in it.”
Matt cleared his throat. “So, truth or dare?”
Anna looked like her heart went out to Matt and she leaned forward on her hands and knees and brushed her nose against his before she pressed a soft kiss to the corner of his lips. "That's tough," she sympathised, staying in his space for a moment before she withdrew.
She sat back on her butt and wet her lower lip, figuring fuck it. "Dare," she said, wiggling on the spot.
Matt blinked as Anna was suddenly in his space and he gave a small smile as she offered up comfort before he just shrugged his shoulders. “It’s alright, I’ve had worse like nearly being mauled to death by a werewolf.”
He did grin a second later when she said dare and he fixed her with a look.
“I dare you to let me touch your wings.”
Anna looked genuinely scandalised for a second. She'd never let anyone touch her wings, not even her adopted mothers (Trent didn’t count, he was different). They- that was just something people didn't do, like touching the wings of a butterfly. But it was a game of truth or dare, and Anna had agreed to play by the rules.
She wet her lower lip and just nodded her head, shifting so that she was lying on her stomach, damaged wings fluttering from where they protruded from her wing buds between her shoulder blades. She was clearly nervous.
"Okay just- be gentle, alright?"
Matt watched Anna closely before he shifted closer. “I promise I’ll be gentle.” And that was exactly he was despite the size of his hands as he very lightly and gently touched her wings, running a featherlight touch over them and trailing that wandering touch over them slowly.
He’d seen a lot of remarkable things since coming to the school, but wings were definitely right at the top of the list.
“You can totally dare me by the way.”
Anna's fingers curled in the sheets in anticipation when Matt's fingers went to touch her wings, a shudder rippling through her with each stroke against the membrane, so soft and fragile underneath Matt's touch that it was so easy to see how fragile they really were, how easily they could be punctured or damaged or ripped to pieces, so clear to see why she kept them so close to herself and hid them.
She pressed her face into the sheets, wing buds twitching with each touch, fingers twisted in the fabric of her bed covers, able to feel the movements of his hands like a jolt through her system, but not in a painful way, God no. In a rather more embarrassing way.
She breathed in through her nose, skin glowing slightly, a soft, candle-like pulse before she nodded, waiting for Matt to stop touching them before she sat up again, cheeks scarlet and wings drooping as if she were exhausted all of a sudden.
"I can? Okay- uh-" she took in a slow breath, feeling her heart hammering in her chest, her blood thrumming through her veins significantly hotter than it had been a moment ago.
She pushed her hand through her hair. "I dare you to call the nearest pizza delivery place and tell them there's an emergency and that you need the fire department and the national guard to hurry to The Raconteur stat."
Matt had he not possessed the enhanced ability to smell things on a very non human level would have thought he was causing Anna harm, but it definitely didn’t smell that way. If anything it smelt very much like… something else. Something far more enjoyable.
He recognised the smell as being…
Oh-
Matt’s eyes widened a little and he ducked his head into a smirk, resisting the urge he had to tease her because hey everybody was entitled to whatever it was that got their motor running. He bit his lower lip and stole a look at her. “You know if you want me to stop all you gotta do is say.”
Of course then she threw out the dare and he chuckled, withdrawing his touch as it was before plucking his phone out of his pocket and doing exactly what she’d dared him to do without a hint of guilt anywhere to be seen.
“If I’d wanted you to stop, I would have told you to,” Anna threw out, though she was clearly a little embarrassed about just how sensitive they were. She supposed that was why she didn’t let people touch them often. Her wing buds were even more sensitive, she dreaded anyone touching those only because she completely lost the ability to focus when that happened. Thankfully it had only happened once or twice.
She wet her lower lip, listening as Matt dramatically regaled this poor pizza guy about the emergency and how confused he sounded when he was sort of ‘so… this isn’t 911?’ and she had her hand over her mouth to stop herself from laughing out loud and giving the game away.
As soon as the phone was hung up, though, she exploded, a peal of light and tinkling laughter escaping her, whole face lighting up with sheer delight.
Matt laughed at the sheer and utter delight Anna seemed to have taken in his latest stunt, phone being discarded as Matt just rolled his shoulders and smirked. “So, Anna, what’s it going to be?” He picked up his forgotten beer and took a slow sip, a considering look being given as he waited for her to reveal if it was truth or dare for her.
And like always Matt sort of owned the space of Anna’s bed, completely comfortable and at ease.
Anna had no problems with Matt owning her space. He could own a whole lot more than that if he wanted. And that wasn't just her stirred up hormones speaking. She looked pensive for a moment, tapping her lower lip.
"I'll break the streak and go for a truth," she said, trying to calm her racing heart down. Fuck.
Matt chuckled and tipped his head back inadvertently exposing his throat as he worked on conjuring a question to the forefront of his mind, the clear line of his adam’s apple present as he swallowed.
“Okay,” he said with a nod as he fixed Anna into place with those eyes of his. “Who was your strangest crush?”
Anna’s eyes slid to Matt’s neck as he exposed the length of it and her wings fluttered a little. She twisted her fingers together and forced herself to look away, reminding herself that this was just a reaction to having a painfully hot guy touching her wings. She hadn’t had this reaction when Trent had touched them, but perhaps that was because they were still painful from having stretched them out?
She didn’t know, didn’t want to think about it too much.
She wrinkled her nose, looking up at the ceiling, a faint sheen of fairy dust along the curve of her neck and the hollow of her throat.
“I had the weirdest crush on the janitor at my old high school. He wasn’t that old, just- I dunno, he was pretty built but- He was the janitor you know? That and I totally had a crush on a cartoon character for the longest time.” She grinned a little, “Simba was hot when he grew up, man. So was Kovu, from Lion King 2?”
She laughed, sheepish and a little embarrassed. “Now I’ve thoroughly embarrassed myself, your turn, truth or dare?
Matt’s eyebrows lifted when Anna admitted to having a crush on the animated Lion from Lion King 2. That was definitely a first for him, but then Callum had a thing for Princess Jasmine, so it wasn’t as weird as it could have been.
“I will take a truth,” he affirmed before he took a further sip of his beer, sharp eyes picking up on what looked like smattering of glittery fairy dust along her neck and in the hollow of her neck.
Anna bit her lower lip, light eyes coming to rest on Matt’s face again just sort of looking at him for a second before she spoke, “What fear keeps you up at night? If anything,” she asked, because she figured they’d been playing for a while, time to get into the nitty gritty. And the naked dares. Definitely the naked dares.
Matt’s brow knitted together before he dropped his gaze away starting to think this thing was a bad idea, especially as he couldn’t lie because that wouldn’t be fair to Anna, especially as she had just admitted to having a crush on a godforsaken animated lion.
“I guess it’s never being good enough,” he shrugged a moment later as he cleared his throat. “I mean, both my brothers, they’re amazing. Smart, capable, and just really awesome.” He scratched at his eyebrow. “So I guess it’s that, that I’ll never be enough for anyone and I’ll just get forgotten about.”
And now he felt horrendously exposed and his discomfort was clear.
Anna felt a crushing sense of sympathy for Matt as he told her what was, definitely, a big secret and she tucked her hair behind her ear before she shuffled a little closer and reached out, touching his cheek and brushing her thumb gently across the skin.
"I can tell you this," she said confidently, "I'll never forget about you," she promised, confident and assured of that fact, "Never."
She ducked into his eyeline, "You're really awesome too, you know. Even if you don't believe it." She bit her lower lip, "You know... I- I always worry that people'll just stop liking me one day. I know I'm a lot of work and hard to handle sometimes and I worry a lot that people'll just give up on me or find someone who's less work to be friends with. So I- I kinda understand where you're coming from. I might not have siblings who make me feel like that but- but I feel it."
She kissed the corner of his mouth again. "But you're stuck with me for the rest of your life. And I'll take a truth."
Matt really did feel super exposed and he was totally about to say something to laugh it off, but then Anna was back in his personal space and he totally didn’t lean into the touch to his cheek and he totally didn’t take comfort in her words.
He soon lifted his eyes and watched her closely as she ducked into his eyeline and then he gave a shake of his head. “Like anybody’s going to get tired of having you around.” He offered a smile and then exhaled a breath, dropping a kiss on her temple before he retreated out of her space and back into his own, trying to compose himself because yeah, fuck, it was never easy being honest.
Matt wasn’t great with the whole… being truthful and emotional thing, that was more Callum and Teddy’s bag than his.
“Truth,” he affirmed before continuing, “What is one thing you do regularly that you would never want to be caught doing?”
Annabelle's lips twisted up into a dirty grin, her eyes sparkling with mischief as if she were considering a very dirty answer before she giggled and pushed her fingers through her hair again.
"Seriously? I'm not good at hiding bad habits and stuff, but I- Every day after class I go to the music room and sit for an hour or so and play piano for a while. I don't- I haven't told anyone I can play 'cause people get kinda weird when you tell them you can do something like that and then they want you to show them and it's just crap."
She shrugged, "And I pick my teeth after meals. With a toothpick, kinda compulsively. Oral hygiene’s very important."
A tilt of her head was her silent question: truth or dare?
Matt was less inclined to go for a truth for fear of exposing something else about himself that he didn’t necessarily want to share because sharing things was uncomfortable and he tended not to make a habit out of it if he could avoid it.
“I think this time around I will take a dare if you don’t mind.”
Seriously he’d rather do something stupid then say something stupid.
Anna had decided to go for a lighter option this time, a slightly less heavy question since he still looked uncomfortable from the last one but then he'd picked dare and that had thrown her off. She was about to ask him something really silly, but figured a dare would help make him feel better.
She figured the more outrageous the better, right? To distract him from their heavy conversation.
"I dare you to take a naked picture of yourself, a naked selfie, if you will, and send it to the sixth contact on your cell phone."
“Seriously?” Matt asked, lifting his eyebrows before he chuckled, hoping and praying that the sixth contact on his cell phone was not his mother, father or brother because that would be hard to explain and embarrassing. “Fine,” he murmured as he clambered off her bed, leaning down to tug his socks off until he was barefoot at which point his hands captured the edges of his shirt before he unceremoniously pulled it off until sure enough he was half naked and looking very much like somebody had had their fingers in his hair.
Matt did stop to rummage out his phone, placing it to one side before off came the jeans, apparent confidence in the way he hooked his fingers in the waistband of his boxer briefs, a wink being given before at the last moment he turned until the sight that greeted her was his very naked very toned ass.
“I swear to God if I send this to my mother,” he grumbled goodnaturedly as he took a complete naked selfie.
Anna watched as Matt undressed, just sort of enjoying the show and tapping her fingers on the bed, a little disappointed when he turned around however his ass was really quite nice so Anna was content with the view she was presented with even if her heartbeat had sped up a little and she wondered if it had just gotten a little... hot in here? Or was it just her?
She tugged a little bit on the lengths of her hair, trying not to let herself get too distracted by the sight in front of her because to be honest between him touching her wings and her now seeing him naked her brain was pretty quick to try and distract her.
"Let's hope it's not your mom," she grinned and tucked her hair behind her ear, clearing her throat and deciding that maybe she should stop looking. If she did that, maybe the flush that was creeping up her neck would go away.
Matt heard the change in Anna’s heartbeat and after having taken his very naked selfie and sent it to Chloe (cue him grimacing) he stole a look over his shoulder giving her a slow grin with a wiggle of his eyebrows which indicated that her playing it cool hadn’t worked out as well as she might have hoped.
Now with the dare over with he tugged his clothes back on, foregoing the socks for the time being, eyes settled on that flush high in her cheeks and smile present.
“So now that I’m done giving you a striptease, truth or dare?”
Fuck. That wiggle of his eyebrows meant that he was onto her. She ducked her head with a sheepish giggle, “I hate werewolves,” she decided after a moment or so. “There’s just something that’s a total cheat about having a- having the whole super senses thing.”
Her tongue touched her canine as she looked up, thoughtful. “It was a very good striptease,” she praised, “If I had any money, I’d have been throwing it at you.”
She grinned and then rubbed a hand against the back of her neck. “Fuck it, dare.”
“Maybe I’ve finally found my vocation in life,” Matt said with a smirk because hey if you had the body then why not play to your strengths? Wasn’t like he had smarts. Besides his mom had been a dancer to pay her way through college so he couldn’t imagine she’d frown on something like that.
He then picked up his beer and took a slow sip, considering what he could dare Anna to do that would in some way make up for his naked selfie.
“I dare you to…” Matt trailed off and then smirked. “To prank call Miss Menides and tell her that somebody’s stolen her car.”
“Don’t talk about yourself like that,” Anna chided before Matt announced what her dare was to be and her eyes widened like dinner plates. She looked totally scandalised at the prospect but, a dare was a dare. She let out a nervous laugh and picked up her cell phone, thumb hovering over the number she had programmed into it for the Headmistress’ office.
She wet her lower lip and didn’t look at Matt because the one time she did she giggled and so turned her head, changing her voice slightly and doing exactly what the dare had required of her. Once she had done as she needed to having somehow managed to convince the Headmistress that someone was stealing her car she hung up the phone and threw it onto the edge of the bed where it bounced off and onto the floor and she smacked his upper arm lightly.
“I’m going to get shot for that. If I end up in detention for a month, you have to come visit me. But she fell for it.”
Matt watched on with amusement as Anna followed through on his dare and he even went so far as to pull a face when he saw her struggling with not laughing, which he was sure wasn’t helping until he just laughed as Anna smacked him on the arm.
“Fine, I’ll visit you.”
He was actually kind of impressed that Anna had actually gone through with it because he had known “men” bail on lesser things so she had definitely won some brownie points, even moreso that she has been convincing enough to fool their headmistress.
“Alright, I’ll take a truth.”
God, she was going to get such a telling off from the Headmistress, but hey, the impressed and happy expressions that had crossed Matt’s face were enough payment for now. And his agreement to sneak into detention for her.
Anna wet her lower lip and shifted on the bed, fixing him with large blue eyes. “Have you ever been in love? If so, with who?”
Ouch, another hard question there from Anna. Matt took a further pull from his beer figuring he was going to need it if he was going to share something that personal, but promises were promises.
“Once,” he affirmed with a nod of his head. “Funnily enough with the same person I just sent my naked selfie too.” Matt shrugged his shoulders and looked at Anna briefly before he looked away. “Her name’s Chloe, she’s- Well,” he cleared his throat and rubbed his fingers through his hair. “She and my brother, Callum, they make a great couple.”
And just like that he downed what remained of his beer.
“So, truth or dare?”
Anna tilted her head, able to see the spark of pain that flashed behind Matt’s eyes and the corners of her lips turned down a little, feeling an irrational surge of anger towards his brother - both of them, really - for the fact that they caused him such sadness. Even if he was trying to hide it. “Shit.” She moved closer, nudging his nose with hers again in her own trademark brand of affection and reassurance. “I swear to God,” she murmured, “It’s her loss.”
She nudged his nose once more before she withdrew, pulling a pillow from the top of her bed and hugging it against her chest. “I’ll take another truth please, Bob.”
