Phantom Unmasking: Felicity & Not!Valentin
On the second night of the play, an unexpected change occurred. After intermission, the Phantom emerged on stage with a distinctly different bearing than the Phantom had in the first part of Act I. He was taller, had straight shoulders, and his singing voice, when Christine awoke, was in a timbre Valentin didn't have the chops to reach. The Phantom continued with confidence through the transition and the murmur that briefly spanned the audience quieted immediately, attention settling as the climax arrived when the Phantom was unmasked.
He was at the organ, playing away as the music crescendoed around them. Felicity as Christine approached and, as rehearsed, off came the mask of the Phantom. Instead of Valentin's boyish looks, Galadari was behind the mask, his angled elven features clearly standing out even in the far reaches of the auditorium. The understudy had become the lead.
