Nick listened as Imani began to hum. The quiet of the evening settled around them and it seemed the stars shone brighter, blinking alongside the moon. It was strange, Nick thought with some amount of wonder, how the atmosphere changed with just a song. He looked down at the girl in his lap, letting the song wash over him and feeling it smooth down the rougher edges of his agitation. Agitation that had been present since taking his rightful place in the real world.
The last notes of the song faded away and Nick was lost in thought, looking straight ahead, eyes unfocused. His hand had gone almost still in her hand with only his thumb occasionally moving to stroke the soft bright locks.
