"They don't know," Victoria said, "I can't tell them. It's bad enough I died. If they found out I—" she paused, trying to think of the right word, "—became a vampire, it would tear them apart more than my dying would." It would lead to more blame, more anger, more sadness, and they already had enough of that to endure. Victoria's sister occasionally let her know the updates on the divorce, and that her brother still spent most of his time drinking than doing anything else.
She shrugged, "But I've let them go. I'm letting them go. I've lost a part of my life and now I must find a new way to live in this one. And just as you can take some things with you into being a vampire, there are some things that you cannot keep anymore. You are not a monster unless you choose to become one."
