He wasn’t entirely sure what to think of Kaden remembering his mother. Josh wasn’t worried about any comparisons, or falling short of his mother’s reputation. His biggest concern was how much hell he would have to pay if Kaden had to call her for any reason to tell her that Josh had gotten in trouble at St. Margaret’s. Josh really never intended for it to happen, he never meant to make his teachers angry, but inevitably, it happened. Maybe the news would be easier to take from a familiar voice. For now, Josh stayed in the positive. He laughed when Kaden nudged him, nodding in agreement. Of all his inheritances, he was happy that most of them came from his mother. “She’s good,” Josh answered with a smile. “She’s over the moon to have me here, and not just because it means that she can start planning her dream road trip.” Sarah had never said as much to Josh, but he wasn’t an idiot, and he knew travel had always been her goal in life.
Josh was about to answer as he stepped through the doorway, but Kaden finished his thought. He was sure that going to school here was a different but equal challenge to teaching at St. Margaret’s. “Oh, she did. She’s always kind of hinted at other beings, but it wasn’t until I was about to leave that she really hit me with everything.” Even now, Josh wasn’t sure he could really understand until he experienced it for himself.
“I could do with a little variety, honestly.” He fell into stride with Kaden, and the walk became more comfortable and casual with every step they took. “Outside of my mom? Not much. I mean, I’ve read stories, comic books, but I know that stuff isn’t really the truth. At least… I don’t think it is.” He wasn’t really a voice of authority on the matter. Just because a lot of what he had looked up online about his own power had seemed fitting didn’t mean that everything else was the same. “Is it rude to ask someone? What they can do, I mean.”
