It took every ounce of self-control Blake possessed not to recoil from the approach of the dragon. It was in his DNA to be on guard around them. To be wary at all times. To not trust. Blake had witnessed dragons manifest as the most breathtaking humans he'd ever seen. They'd appeared as helpless old women, beggars, or even children like this green. Each time it was a ploy to get his guard down. Now he had to fight that instinct as the young hatchling latched onto his bummed leg in a possessive embrace. Never show weakness to a dragon, even one he was trying to help.
Blake had seen her acceptance of the toy the same way all dragons accepted a gift and knew he was making progress now. Reacting by shoving her away would only be a step backwards. He released a slow breath, calming himself. "Come, little Ryuuko. Let us be gone from here and never look back."
Without waiting for her response, knowing she was happy with the gift, Blake reached down and carefully lifted the human shaped dragon off the floor to carry in his arms. If they needed to run, he wanted to keep her close. "Stay in this form for as long as you can, especially if you see any other humans. It is not safe to show your true form to any of them."
