Kane was lounging in his room watching YouTube videos. It wasn't the most useful waste of his time, but it was entertaining, and he hadn't decided yet if he wanted to go find someone to waste time with instead. The students graduated and he didn't see any of them off, having not been particularly close to that class, outside of a pleasant enough end note with Paxton. The weather was getting much better in Maine; it might never have the dry desert beauty of Las Vegas, but it held some appeal. Now it was just a count down until August for his birthday, when he would bid adieu himself. There may be a few he would keep in contact with afterward, but none of them would keep him at the school. It'd been a prison sentence of a sort, albeit one with pretty people and a few interesting classes. His phone buzzed and he took a quick look at it, not planning on answering, until he saw it was Helena's snapchat. His smile was instant, picking it up to open the app. The two of them needed extensive data plans for how much they used the program to keep in contact, updating so often in a given day that there wasn't a thing the other one didn't know. Kane narrowed his eyes once the picture opened, tilting his head since it looked as if Helena was at the front of St. Margaret's. Did she photoshop that? Or .... Kane jumped to his feet, not bothering to put shoes on at all, or to lock his door behind him, as he hurried out of his room and toward that spot. It'd been five years since he and his sister were in the same space. Their parents did not allow one another to visit the other, their bitter separation isolating the twins from one another. They found ways around it, like Snapchat or Skype or Facetime. So they managed to see each other and talk, but it was still not the same as being together. If this was real, he knew exactly why it happened, and he didn't even care that it meant his father's manipulation was working. Nothing mattered more than his sister. He turned the corner and saw her, and without a word swept her up into a hug. Right off her feet, his embrace tight, but there was nothing he could say in this emotionally charged moment. Kane was without snark, although it would come back to him. For now, he just needed reassurance that she was real and there, and everything felt right for the first time in years. |
