Inside the Lighthouse: John and Kane and Open
Kane scoffed. "You say that like it's hard. Anyone with half a brain and eyes can see you have a severe self-esteem problem. You're only a teenager, so that has to mean someone or someones made you this way. No one is born thinking they are a charity case." He did generally find the way people worked interesting, and if it wasn't personal, if Dana wasn't involved, he would find John a fascinating person. He'd even want to crack that head open and learn more about it, get the broody teenager to talk. But that also would require effort, and Kane didn't like the chase so much as the easy path most of the time.
"I actually do understand to a point what she sees in you. You're attractive and intelligent, and clearly haven't experienced a lot of kindness or affection in your life. But your attitude is the thing holding you back from happiness. I don't really care about your past. Everyone has issues." Kane unfolded his hands, refusing to let this kid bait him any more than he already had. So infuriating. "I'm sure you'll use all of this as an emo excuse to hurt her some more by refusing to talk to her. All because the mean demon got in the way. Go ahead and make that narrative. I really don't give a fuck."
And with that message given, he was more than happy to do a flounce off. He turned and went back down the stairs toward the party.
