Beltane night. According to legend it was the last night of the year the Wild Hunt could ride until Samhain. Ellie loved the legends. More, she loved learning the history and truth behind the legends. In their world, some of these things were more than legend, they were unadulterated truth. Some of them were beautiful. Others were horrific and deadly. The legend of the Cernunnos, or Hern, and the Wild Hunt was potentially one of the latter, but so far as Ellie could find, was completely unsubstantiated. After talking with Andrei, and being taunted by Barclay the Arse, she wanted to run her own experiment.

She didn’t tell anyone she what she was going to do. Only Andrei had any idea she might go out and try her luck. Well, Andrei and anyone who read what they were speaking about, but so far no one had approached her to tell her what a shite idea this was. Ellie waited until it was late enough for everyone to be settled in their rooms, dressed for warmth since it was still pretty chilly at night, then snuck out leaving her desk light on. Anyone seeing it would assume she was up late studying, not an unusual occurrence. Once clear of the Pegasus house she ran for the woods before someone saw her.

She brought a flashlight with her, but had a pillar candle with her as well. Tonight was a night for fire, but a bonfire was not a good idea or she’d draw the wrong kind of attention. Besides, lighting a candle was easier for her to control than a whole bonfire. She knew where she wanted to go, where she might stand the best chance for an encounter: the circle of stones. Ellie knew the way and made for it unerringly. Once there she moved to the center of the stones and sat down, set the candle into the dirt then called fire to the wick. Then she waited, her green eyes on the sky.

Katherine had spoken a little to Ellie about the whole legend. She had no idea about this legend before finding out about it from the other girl, and due to all of the things she had seen and learned since being at this school she was willing to believe it. She didn't really think that Ellie would actually go out into the woods later, and if she was going to Kat had hoped she would at least call her so she wouldn't be completely alone.

By the time the campus had become completely dark the blonde had just about given up on Ellie calling her, and she was getting ready for bed; however, something outside caught her eye. She stared into the darkness for a bit and was positive she saw a flash of red hair heading in the direction of the woods. She slipped on her shoes then quickly and quietly ran through the hall and out the door. She tried to find some sign of which way to go, but couldn't figure it out at first. She headed in the direction that she had seen the flash of red hair go though to start.

After entering the woods she was completely lost. The smart idea would be to head back, but she was a little worried about her friend; therefore, she pressed on. She didn't know if she was going the right way or not, but she was making her way through the woods as though it were something she had already done a little while ago. She would just see a path and had a strange feeling that told her that was the way. Eventually she saw a faint glow and began heading towards it. "Ellie?" she said as she grew closer to the light, "Is that you?"

Ellie heard someone call her name and whipped her head around in surprise. She called up a small flicker of fire to get a better look at who it was then smiled when she recognized Kat.

"Hi!" she called out quietly. "Aye, tis me. C'mon!" She waved Kat to join her in the circle. "Sorry I ducked out without ya, but I was afraid someone had seen me. Then I left me phone in me room, an' I had no way ta text ya."

"I thought you'd given up," Kat admitted as she came into the circle and found a spot to sit, "Honestly I'm surprised I managed to find you." She hadn't really explored the woods much to be honest which made her finding Ellie even more amazing. "So has anything happened yet?"

She looked around the sky curiously as though she thought perhaps the hunt would suddenly appear due to her showing up and saying something. It happened in the movies all the time, why not happen every now and then in real life right?

	"Ha!" Ellie scoffed quietly as she tossed a lock of her hair back over her shoulder. "Not a chance. This is the ultimate research project. I'll find out the truth some time or another." Kat grinned. She was still only just learning about the supernatural world; after all, before she came here she only knew about witches and weres as well as what she could pick up about vampires from movies. Ollie had never wanted her to have to deal with this stuff, so he didn't talk about much more than just typical highschool drama. The idea that some of the myths and legends about special days could be true was kind of exciting to her honestly. Sure this particular one had some frightening aspects, but just to see something would be incredible.

"How much research have you done so far on this legend?" she asked curious about if the hunt took place across the whole world or if it was supposed to take place in certain areas, or maybe it moved from year to year.

Ellie knew more than was probably good for her. Once she latched onto something that caught her interest she'd delve into every book, website and rumor she could find about it to get to the truth. The problem was that she didn't have the experience to piece it all together to get a more real picture.

"I've read a few books," she answered, "found some websites. There's conflicting information depending on the origin of the legend. Some say Cernunnos. Some say they only ride on Halloween. Some say you have a choice if they find. Some say ya don't. S'why I wanna find out fer meself."

	Katherine wasn't really a slacker or anything, but researching so much on something non school related was pretty impressive. She made a mental note that if she ever needed a tutor Ellie was probably the girl for the job. "It is pretty interestin," Kat admitted, "Let's just hope we don't wind up being the hunted." Ellie already tutored Noah. She enjoyed it, and not just because Noah was cute. If she had to pick another career option she might consider teaching, but she was determined to be a Supernatural Archaeologist or Anthropologist. She'd create the title if it didn't already exist.

She giggled at Kat and winked. "I'd set 'em on fire before I let 'em hurt ya." She wiggled her fingers with a grin.

"Yer datin' Malachi, aye?" That glint of curiosity that showed in her eyes in classes appeared and was directed at Kat. "Whassat like? Havin' a boyfriend?"

Katherine giggled and actually felt a bit safer with that thought too. Her power was definitely not an offensive power, and in fact tended to cause her to become even more vulnerable when activated. With Ellie's promise to burn anyone that meant her harm she felt a great deal safer.

At the question of her relationship, her eyes came back down to look at the red haired girl. She nodded at the first question. "It's nice," she said as she tried to come up with the proper words to describe it in better detail. "It's nice to have someone to cuddle with even if we have to be a bit more careful due to my power," she continued, "He's always givin me compliments and stuff."

"Sometimes I can tell he wants to kiss me though, and I feel bad that we can't," she said suddenly realizing she had never said that out loud. She shook her head, "Sorry."

Ellie looked back at Kat in earnest curiosity. She knew plenty of people who were dating exclusively with someone. It had been something she thought she wanted for a while now, but she was learning she had no idea what a relationship was. She wanted to know what the truth was, but hadn't ever been in a situation to ask where she wouldn't feel like an idiot. She trusted Kat who was nicer than anyone had a right to be.

She smiled wistfully as she listened to Kat. The part about not being able to kiss each other was sad, but she'd do anything for even that much. "Dun apologize," she said as her smile lifted. "It sounds wonderful."

Katherine smiled back at her. As beautiful as Ellie was it was hard to believe that she didn't have a boyfriend or girlfriend honestly. She was smart, kind and had that accent that even caused Katherine to smile and blush whenever a compliment was given.

"Are ya interested in someone?" It was Katherine's turn to be curious. She knew that Ellie had a bad experience with Rider, but maybe there was someone new causing her to want to know what that was like.

	Ellie's smile became a brief grin before she shook her head. "Nah." She looked down at the candle she had placed in the center of the circle. "I gave up on tha' idea a while ago." Everyone she'd ever been interested in only saw her as a friend. She'd learned a valuable lesson with the Rider incident. She wouldn't be so quick to give her heart out again. "You shouldn't give up on it," Katherine replied, "You're gorgeous and sweet. Honestly I'd be willin to bet there's someone here who's got a crush on you and is just too afraid to talk to you." She'd actually be surprised if there wasn't, plus she just wanted to help Ellie out. She was just so sweet and Katherine didn't want her thinking that she should give up on love especially so early in life. Besides, if Katherine could find someone with her problem, then she had no doubt that Ellie could.

Kat earned herself a grateful smile and a blush for the compliments, but there wasn't any excitement in Ellie's eyes. "Och, I doubt tha', but yer sweet ta say."

She looked back up at the sky as she shrugged her shoulders. "Probably better this way. I need ta study an' work on controllin' me fire. I'm close ta Sorin, but he's more sweet on others than he is on me."
