Lucia was cold to the touch. Not just room temperature like vampires, but radiating cold out all around her. She would warm up when summer came, and when she was being a caregiver, she could prevent the flowers she touched from getting frost damage, but her elemental fae power was naturally ice.
As a result, people didn't normally touch her. Not that she made herself readily accessible to be touched, hiding back to spy, observing humans in their strange interactions. But when Bayani touched her cheek, when he looked at her with such care and love and pressed a kiss to the crown of her head, it bloomed a warmth of a different kind. Lucia smiled coyly.
Before she could answer Bayani's plea, a bee came flying past them, pausing briefly to land on Bayani's shoulder. Lucia transformed in the blink of an eye. Her benevolent eyes turned ink black, her small teeth sharpened into rows of icy stalagmites and stalactites. Chomp chomp chomp! they gnashed together as a short but enraged howl escaped her throat.
Flicking her finger, Lucia's ice powers lashed out and froze the bee, capturing it in a frozen pose. Dead.
Faerie dust was no longer floating from her skin and the soft cheerful bells had stopped. The forest glade seemed to have grown darker as the ice sphere that contained the impudent bee fell and bounced on the half-frozen moss. Satisfied, Lucia's eyes lightened to their clear azure again, a sweet smile lighting up her face now with normal teeth.
"You are mine." She clasped Bayani's hands in hers, translucent blades of wings fluttering behind her to lift her off the ground again. "Come! I will show you where my heart is."
