Paxton raised an eyebrow at that response. It seemed out of character for the vampire and oddly, because of that, genuine. Leon wasn't the type to gush or to offer hollow platitudes simply because social contracts expected him to do that.
Leon, it seemed, was being honest.
"I never got that," Paxton said, "the idea that love is supposed to make you happy." Paxton was, to the marrow of his infernal bones, a cynic. The whole Davian/Ambriel-courtship didn't convince him that a true romantic love like that was something to desire. Rather, he thought them both idiots. "Love is something that happens to you, isn't it? And then you deal with it as best you can." Paxton shrugged. "But thanks."
