"Oh, I see." John nodded. "Sorry." It was easy to forget sometimes that she was not human, wasn't supposed to be human. But it all came back pretty quickly and John remembered his own failures. Then again, he thought, she wouldn't have been able to learn about love if she had never been human. Not in the way she said she loved someone who left her. John wanted to point out that Sara wasn't a human either, but instead focused on this lover she said she had and left.
He opened his mouth to ask more, but too quickly, Cori turned it on him. Like a deer caught in the headlights (he felt she may get this irony later), John stared at her. "I... No. Not like theirs. Not that level." John looked away and cleared his throat. "Who, uh... Who left you? If you don't mind me asking?"
