Everyone knew that Ashton was out of sorts. While they weren't in classes, Jae saw Ashton occasionally and when she did, he appeared thinner and increasingly upset. Without needing to attend classes, he spent almost all of his time in the infirmary. Jae felt helpless as she had no magic to help bring Barclay back. While she had no one she would say she felt that sort of love for, she did have those she cared for deeply she called her friends. If they were in that situation, she imagine she might be behaving similarly to Ashton. As she spoke with other people about new hobbies to pick up, she remembered she used to play Baduk with her mother. Her mother always won, but her mother had centuries of experience and knowledge to defeat her daughter in a very complex game of tactics and logical reasoning. When she thought of Ashton, she knew it would be a game he would like. She had her own set that her mother sent her as a Christmas gift, and gathering it together, she went to the infirmary. When she walked in, Mr. Pheres looked at her curiously and she bowed respectfully to him, explaining she came here to spend some time with Ashton. He eyed the board and bag of black and white pebbles briefly before letting her move along. Jae came to stand a few feet behind Ashton who sat vigilant next to Barclay's bed. Barclay lay there unmoving with medical equipment saying he was still alive but his chest was the only thing moving. A slow rise and fall in a steady rhythm. "Hello," she said in Korean to Ashton, knowing he'd understand her. Ashton had taken lessons in Korean from her pretty regularly since her arrival at the school over a year before. He had a natural talent for languages, and once they got past some of the grammatical differences and the conjugational details, all he really had to learn now was the vocabulary. She came to set the board on a nearby table and pulled it closer to where Ashton sat, "How is he doing today?" |
