Emily just felt off. Something was wrong. Part of her was missing. Usually when she got back to school she was bright eyed and eager to get back to magic, meeting new races, and being totally engrossed in this magical world but…no. Sure she was a little excited with Kat there with her, but she still felt weird. Of course her Ollie wasn’t there…off to college and she missed him. Skyping with him wasn’t the same. She saw him for Thanksgiving but once again she dreaded going back to school…something that had never happened before.
She didn’t really figure out what is was until she visited him for their Star Wars weekend. Sure the result of it was a shit storm of teachers promising detention and whatever but honestly….it was Star Wars….she was far from caring about detention. She’d suffer ten detentions but she wasn’t going to miss Star Wars….which was awesome by the way. But anyway, Ollie had class the next day so she tagged along which his teachers had no issue with…which is refreshing, letting a student handle their own life. But college was different, you technically are a grown up…on your own…taking care of your own things. High school was more controlled, even though you were away from home like college you were controlled. If you missed a class at college the teacher wouldn’t track you down…at St. Margaret’s you miss a class and that teacher comes and finds you. Invasion of privacy much? But no matter.
The biggest thing that she noticed in his classes and meeting some of his college friends is that they were….normal. None of them knew what Ollie was, knew what she was, and they were all fine. She had to stop herself from including “the weather witch” in her introduction to them. She was just Emily, Ollie’s girlfriend, queen of the nerds. She felt human….normal which was odd but really refreshing. At St. Margaret’s she got to embrace that side of herself but she felt like the human part of her was being neglected. She felt she was being defined by what she was, what she could do, not who she was. She was missing who she was, she got to see her at college with Ollie and she felt relaxed…at home almost. Now…it just was all wrong.
This is why she was going to talk to Mr. Kaden. Sure Mr. Cavanaugh was her head of house and he was really smart but kind of a hard ass…he wouldn’t understand. Mr. Kaden was warm and nurturing…he had been a father…he’d understand. Ollie had told her after their break up he was the one who talked to him….who sympathized. He was the only one she felt like she could talk to. She stopped in front of his door and knocked twice.
