Being back in her old school was surreal for Elle. She’d spent nearly ten years of her life purposely not thinking about this place or anyone in it. Now that she was back within its walls, she found she couldn’t stem the tide of memories from swirling around her. Happy memories. Embarrassing ones. Some sad and painful. Yet, regardless of the particular emotion they evoked in her, there were all events that had contributed to who she was as a person. They’d helped shape her. This whole place had shaped her. As much as she’d tried to pretend otherwise for a long time, she fit here better than anywhere else. She’d just had a conversation discussing territory lines with a dragon and hadn’t batted an eye. But more than anything else, Elle was currently overwhelmed by a feeling of acceptance. Here she was surrounded by people who not only knew her secret, but understood it.
Living as she had been, in her little condo in the middle of suburbia, among her regular teenage students, with her unremarkable coworkers, Elle had been content. But it wasn’t until this moment that she realized how much she’d isolated herself by cutting the supernatural community out. A lump rose in her throat and she swallowed past it. Live and learn, Elle. She told herself. You’re here now. Enjoy it.
Micah would help with that. She’d been beyond pleased when she’d seen his name listed among her fellow faculty members. And even more so at the surprise he’d shown at her appearance. They two had been good friends in their school days, but hadn’t spoken since they’d left the academy. Elle was looking forward to catching up with him and hearing about everything he’d done in the years since she’d seen him last. She couldn’t imagine anything other than happiness for him and sincerely hoped life had been kind.
She found her way to Ladon and laughed at herself as she was hit with another wave of memories. She was biased naturally, but Ladon would always be the best house in her opinion. The Head of House’s office was right where she remembered it and she gave a couple cheerful raps on the door. “Mr Kaden?” Her mouth had long since turned back up into a smile. “Sir?”
