Jae will eat your heart out ([info]stealyourheart) wrote in [info]st_margarets,

Thread: Friends in Need
WHO: Jae Song & Davian Rivera
WHEN: Nov. 30, after classes
WHERE: Dustin's Tomes & Volumes

It'd been a week since she'd agreed to meet Sorin. He told her he was going to try to help her. To pull Eunji out of that painting. To have Jae face her friend who spent the last fifty years trapped there. It was that reason in particular that Jae texted Sorin and said she had to work. She didn't really. Not yet. She called Dustin as soon as she could, pleading for a shift, and he was happy to provide her with one. Sorin understood and Jae felt bad for lying but there were some things she felt prepared for and some things she didn't. She'd been so desperate to get Eunji out that now seeing the real possibility of it happening scared the life out of her. She panicked. She was still panicking in a way. Because Sorin was waiting for her to be ready and Jae didn't think that she ever could be. For a girl who never procrastinated an assignment and made a point to remember things, this avoidance said a lot about how she felt about seeing Eunji again.

Her eyes closed as she placed a book on a shelf. The classes let out for the day and Jae attended her clubs and meetings before heading into Camden to work. It was just Dustin and her at the bookstore, and not many people wandered into the store to purchase books. Most of those that did come in were just there for Dustin. A reason that Jae understood on some level. And it was why she was grateful that when she heard Davian's voice in the shop, Dustin was out to grab some food for his break and currently not in the store.

"I'm back here," she called to him and then walked around a shelf to spy her demon friend, "He's getting some food and the store is empty except for me. You can stop doing that." There was always patience in her voice when she spoke to Davian. Not necessarily tried patience, though right now there was a hint of that. While Davian was probably the person she'd come the closest to since coming to the school, sometimes he could wear on her nerves. But she knew that beyond the surface, Davian was amazing. Kind and loving, and one of the best people she ever knew. Despite being over three hundred years old, Jae didn't really know all that many people, but even if she did, Davian was someone that people often underestimated and looked down on. It's what made her so protective of him.

"Are you on break?" she then asked, knowing he also worked in town but at Duke's Diner where he washed dishes and emptied out their orange juice supplies on a regular basis.

Disappointed to walk into an empty shop and not have his "Is there a hottie available to find a book for me?" shouted question not answered by Dustin, Davian followed the sound of Jae's voice instead and walked to the back where she was stocking the shelves.

He leaned up against the nearest bookshelf languidly and yawned. "No, I got off early," he mumbled, smacking his lips and looking around the place. Davian smelled like dish soap and cigarette smoke and his hair was still pulled high on the crown of his head with two elastic holders to form a mini-whale spout of dark hair. His horns were partially showing through the hair, black jagged edges that were darker than the color of his hair, and it was a testament to how tired Davian was that he didn't bother hiding them with a glamour.

"Can we go? Just leave that there," he pointed at the pile of books she was working on.

Jae's nose picked up on the scent that was now a staple of Davian. She could do without that mixture. It was like Davian was starting to take a bath but walked out halfway. Her nose crinkled and she made a small noise to acknowledge she heard him say he'd gotten off early. If he'd been fired, he would've told her. Or at least, she hoped he would've told her. She eyed him and noted the lack of glamour.

"Did you get fired?" she asked, getting right to the point. He seemed anxious to go. Something was up. Jae continued, "You can tell me. But I thought you liked that job." At least he liked that the place had orange juice on tap for him and he took full advantage. Maybe the orange juice was never enough, but somehow it often felt like it was for him.

She rose from where she was squatting down and held two books to her chest, "What happened?"

"What?" Davian blinked at her, confused at the question for a moment before all the possibilities that could come from it rushed through his mind. Hell, he wished he was fired. He wished he could be fired and not get in trouble with his PO, rather. The weight of that last thought took away any high hopes of sleeping in and not having to wash another greasy dish ever again. Davian sighed and pouted.

"No. Fucking no. I'm just so fucking tired." He rubbed his eye with the heel of his hand. Mondays were really the worst. "I haven't slept in ten hours." It was really a long time for him. Davian hadn't even been able to catch a nap in class like normal, and his hiding place during lunch where he planned to stay and skip his afternoon class was discovered by the damn dog who dragged him out by his pant leg to go to Ms. Hallowfen's class. Then he went straight to work.

Davian blinked sleepily at Jae and a grin stole over his expression. "Why'd you work today? I thought you were off. Couldn't stay away from lover boy for long?"

Ten hours? Jae blinked a few times at him and then remembered this was Davian. If he had his choice, he'd been awake only long enough to have sex and eat, and the latter of those two wasn't necessarily needed. She sighed but was grateful that he wasn't fired. She didn't want him to lose his job and get into more trouble with his parole officer and the law. Friends were one of the chief reasons that Jae stayed at St. Margaret's, though she knew she had to be there for more than just friends. But it'd been a long time since she had people to call friends.

This brought to mind Eunji and the question Davian posed to her reminded Jae of why she was at work and not with Sorin. "No," she replied flat and then said, "I just wanted more work, that's all." Jae could sometimes be good at lying, but others times not so much. Actually, most of the time she wasn't great about lying. It was something she probably should work on more considering whenever she returned to Korea, the lying would save her life from any who hunted kumiho.

"So I asked for more hours," she added, "That's it." Every word came out with a slight hesitation. She knew Davian wasn't going to buy it though and she also knew he was going to think she was here for Dustin. Yes, Dustin was very attractive to look at, but she could've had an ugly boss and wanted to work here anyway. Especially when work was a great excuse to avoid people.

"Who the fuck wants more work?" Davian stared at her like she'd grown another head. Sometimes he didn't get Jae at all, and most of the time he thought she was only joking, just to find out later that she'd been completely serious about picking up a dozen instruments and getting 150% on her assignments in classes and basically being the best at everything she tried. It wasn't something Davian could relate to. He was good at some things, and that was good enough for him. He'd spent his whole life failing, so to succeed even in the smallest way was utterly satisfying. Jae took it to a whole other level.

"Whatever. That's not it." Even if Jae did sometimes act like a workaholic, he knew when she was not being completely truthful with him. He'd spent a lot of time with her, through thick and thin, and had come to pick up on some of those little signs. It was a testament to their friendship that he bothered at all to even pay attention. "What's the real reason?" He narrowed his eyes.

Then they widened. "Oh my fuck, that's right! You're supposed to be with the summoner!"

For once, Jae wished that Davian would just let the lie stand, but this was Davian. He wasn't going to let it, especially when she was the one spouting it. He pursued with another question and she was going to tell him it was Dustin, just because it seemed like the obvious one and he'd have the satisfaction of knowing he might have been right. But then he actually remembered what her plans were. She didn't remember telling him but likely did mention it at some point.

Jae's face burned a furious shade of red. She swallowed and tried to think of something to say immediately and to just deny it but it was over. He knew and she instead said, "I don't want . . . " but the words died because she was basically admitting she didn't actually want to bring Eunji back. She hadn't really told him that much though. Only that she was supposed to be meeting with Sorin this afternoon.

"What does it matter? I'm here," she said.

It was rare that Davian got to be the one on this side of the conversation and his smile from ear to ear was only diminished by the realization that something was actually the matter. Something was wrong here. He picked up on it and his smile of triumph faded.

"What'd he do to you?" Was his first question with his first thought being that Sorin had somehow hurt her, done something to make her avoid him, like Leon had. Then the demon looked a little more fierce - bellied a bit by the glittery headband and tangled hair. "What the fuck did he do?"

The question took Jae by surprised. The expression on Davian's face as well. Usually she was the one getting upset on his behalf and stepping in to tell his persecutors to back up. Some didn't take her seriously but others knew what they were doing was wrong and backed up, worried about the same scrutiny from other students. Jae blinked a few times and quickly set her books aside and raised her hands to Davian.

"No, he didn't do anything," she said quickly and then felt her cheeks color red with embarrassment and looked down, "It's . . . me. He wants to help me get Eunji out. He doesn't know it's Eunji I'm trying to out and he told me he was ready to try. When he told me I should have been excited but I felt like I was going to throw up." She carried Eunji all the way over to America to get her some help while attending school and now that there was a chance? She panicked.

She shrugged a shoulder and then looked at Davian, feeling pretty pathetic. She could call out Andrei and threaten to break his hand, but the thought of seeing Eunji again scared the daylights out of her.

Davian blinked, staring at her in confusion. Jae was blushing? And not because he was teasing her about how she checked out Dustin's ass when she thought he wasn't looking? The pieces were starting to come together once his memory jogged on Eunji and exactly why she might be worried about her friend coming back to the land of the living.

"Shit..." he sighed, reaching up to run fingers through his hair. They snagged on the headband and he tugged it out of his mess of hair, setting it aside. "What are you gonna do? I mean, if it works and she comes back? Fuck, she'll just want to know what the Hell happened and you'll explain it to her and it'll be fine. I'm sure it'll just blow over." Sloth demon logic, but it was his go to. "You're doing that thing where you worry too much, sweetcheeks."

"I don't know," Jae admitted, "I don't—I don't know. I really don't. It's why I canceled. Or lied. I wasn't lying. I got the shift, and so I had to work. He told me to talk to him when I have time and I need to come up with things. I have practices for the couple of weeks for the recital but after that I have nothing. I'm not going to Korea for Christmas and I can't work all day."

She knew Davian was using the only logic he could think of, but she couldn't buy into that. It wasn't going to blow over. She reminded him without even having to say much to him than ask him how his summer was. It wasn't like Sorin was going to allow himself to forget again. She just had to hope that Barclay's shop was going to keep him plenty busy.

"What would you do?" she asked, "If you had to face someone you really cared about and then did something very bad to. It's my fault she's in there, and—I don't want her to come back." But she did. Jae was worrying a lot though and her hands were fidgeting before her.

She mumbled some Korean to herself and then shrugged, "Davian, you need to help me keep busy. Keep him away. Find things for me to do." She paused and then added, "That isn't your homework."

"What would I do?" Davian blinked. Jae asking him for advice was just as rare as Davian seeing her in this worried unsure state. If not more rare. He wet his lips and gave her a stern look, gripping Jae by her shoulders. "I'll keep him the fuck away, but listen to me," his gaze grew more intense as he stared at her. "If you don't want her back yet, then fuck it. Tell him you don't need him yet. She's not going anywhere, is she? Last time I checked, paintings don't have an expiration date."

Davian's smirk slid back into place and he nodded at her. "Easy. Just tell him you fixed it yourself for now. You can always ask him again when you're ready."

Davian would help her. That was a relief, in a way. Though she knew that Davian wasn't going to be around her all the time. She'd just have to hope he could help her think of excuses. Davian was generally good about coming up with excuses . . . that involved sleep. She pressed her lips together tightly and nodded, putting some faith into her friend. because he was her friend.

"What if I'm never ready? And she's there for hundreds of years?" Jae asked, still feeling the panic but having Davian assuring her she didn't have to do it soon and then he suggested a lie. "I'm bad at lying."

"Well shit, I don't know. How are we even sure this kid can do the job? Maybe he's just a hack." Davian gave a shrug, but then another thought occurred to him and he fixed Jae with a direct look.

"Sometimes you just have to do shit even though you're not ready for it. Look at me," he gestured to himself. "I'm the biggest fuck up in this school, but you know what? It's working out." he smiled, sharp teeth flashing. "And I know it'll work out for you, too."

"He has the power to do it," Jae said, "I . . . walked in on him one time and he had summoned something from a book. He's been practicing too." Which meant that he very well could pull something like this off, which was led to her terror and stress. Funny how the one thing she claimed to have wanted for so long now sat before her, ready to happen, and she tucked her tail and ran.

Jae looked at him seriously, "You're not that, you know." She sincerely didn't believe that either. Davian sometimes prided himself on things but she knew by now that his failures actually did bother him. He would sleep them off to ignore them, but he had to force himself to shut down every time.

Davian didn't have a very deep understanding of magic, but in the time he'd been in the demon commune, he'd seem demons work some powerful stuff. And then, coming to the Academy, he'd been given even more reason to be impressed by magic. So he didn't bat an eye when Jae told him Sorin was summoning something from a book. Why not? Magic could do anything, or so Davian believed.

"Hey," Davian pointed at her nose and gave her a stern look. "You're not going to change the subject. I'm too fucking smart for that." he smirked though, and then clipped her chin with a hook in his finger. "Let's go get food. We can talk some more about how you're going to grow some balls and get ready to see Eugene again. Or whatever the fuck her name is, fuck." It was a hard one for him to remember, much less pronounce.

The way Davian said Eunji's name was probably the best English equivalent to it. Jae smiled at him and said, "I'm not changing the subject. Just correcting you. That's what I do." Usually it was just his manners, but sometimes she had to point out to him that he wasn't as much of a waste as he thought he was. In fact, she didn't think he was a waste at all.

"Eugene works," she said, "And I can't go until Dustin gets back. There's no one else in this store working except me." She gave him a stern look and then the bell rang, signaling Dustin's return. She looked his direction and before she could ask, he noted Davian and said, "Jae, go ahead and take a break."

She didn't say anything, only smiled, and then grabbed Davian, dragging him out before he could say anything to embarrass her.
