Log: Guilt, forgiveness and furstrations.
WHO: Daniela & Victoria Vazquez
WHEN: Sept. 8, afternoon-eveningish
WHERE: Daniela's Dorm, Kitsune
WHAT: Sisterly reunion.
Daniela's room was still a mess. There were boxes stacked in the corner and a couple that were open, its contents spilling onto the floor next to her bed and desk. Daniela had only had time to unpack the boxes that held her essentials and tidiness was low on her list of to-dos. It was her second night in St. Margaret's and her first day of class. All in all, it had been pleasant. There had been so much that Daniela had not expected, from the students and teachers, to the classes and curriculum. Daniela sat crosslegged on the floor, the schools' welcome pack and her class handouts strewn in a half-circle around her. There was quite a lot of take in but she was determined to work through it. This was her new start in a new school. One were she wouldn't be known as the poor sister of the dead girl. Daniela had just posted an introduction on the school's private network when a knock on her door came soon after. This was stupid. This was so stupid. Now would be a good time to call Romina and plead for her to take her away. Why didn't Romina tell her? Maybe she didn't know. There would be a call to Romina later, but for now, Victoria had walked over to Kitsune dorms and to the room she'd been told that Daniela lived in. This was such a bad idea but it was better to have this discussion now than later. Even if Victoria would rather not have it at all. She was dressed in red. Victoria often wore red. If not as the main color then it was an accent somewhere else on her clothing or painted on her lips. Her hair looked perfect as always and she was the same image as she'd been alive, only now she was paler. Victoria would look this way for as long as her life as a vampire may be. Seventeen going on twenty-two. Victoria contemplated asking James to be there with her but she felt like this was a conversation she needed to have with Daniela alone. She waited there, feeling the anxiety in her stomach and waiting for the door to open. She would've just walked in but vampires needed the invitation in. Daniela stuck her pen between her lips and pushed herself off the floor. She wasn't expecting anyone but as a new student who knew no one, there was a small spark of interest that rode along every social interaction, a small hope that this would be the perfect best friend. Daniela paused and smoothed down her hair. Smiling brightly, she opened the door with a slight flourish-- "Vi! Ni a palos!" Her smile froze and she reached out and gave the other girl a sharp prod. Not a ghost, but her sister in the flesh. Or a very good copy. Confusion. Anger. Disbelief. "What is this? Who are you?" Daniela asked, her voice high and her words pinched. Her grip tightened on the door frame and she took half a step back. Victoria felt the prod and could see the look at Daniela's face. The shock. Confusion. Anger. And then the question. It would be easy for Victoria to say that she wasn't her sister but it's not like that ruse would last for very long. While much of Victoria's more recent activity may have been not very aligned with her Catholic upbringing, but some things she couldn't not be. And with her family, she had to be honest. "I'm Victoria," she answered, "And I'm sorry." She thought that maybe that guilt that had become all too familiar growing up wouldn't feel as strong, but it hit her. Victoria thought she felt it bad before when she'd seen her family struggling, but now that she had to face one of them? This was a completely new problem. And it hit so much closer to her heart. "It's complicated," Victoria added, knowing it wouldn't help much. Daniela's gaze roamed over Victoria, taking in the familiar face, the hair, the clothes... her sister. She looked as glamorous and delicate as always. This was the Victoria that Daniela thought about when she thought of her sister, not the sickly pale version lying in her death bed. Daniela crossed herself. She didn't understand how Victoria could be standing here and perhaps she would have been more understanding if Victoria had plead ignorance and confusion as well. "How could you!" In a flash, her thoughts spiralled back to the dreadful memories -- her parents' face as they told their two remaining daughters of Victoria's passing, the funeral, the sad smile Romina had expressed once in passing, the pitying looks from her classmates afterwards. A knot was forming in her stomach and Daniela could feel her muscles tense. "Daniela, it's very difficult to explain. If you let me come in, we can talk about this instead of speaking about it like this," Victoria said with a bit of pleading in her voice. Kitsune often spoke to each other. They were one of the most socialable houses with big personalities (for the most part). It made sense why Daniela would be sorted there. But even then, this was a personal family matter and shouldn't be to the ears and eyes of the others in Kitsune. Victoria would rather not have this conversation at all. She'd like for this to be a dream. This and the whole summer before it. Now here sister was here and Victoria had read the comments on her sister's journal. She could see spirits? She was a witch and dealt with spirits and ghosts? What on earth happened in the last year and a half? Daniela nodded slowly and moved aside. Anyone else and she would have been felt mortified at receiving 'visitors' while her room was in such a state, but this was...Victoria. Her sister. Flesh and blood. Even in the privacy of her thoughts, Daniela found it hard to believe. And the permission to enter was granted. Victoria followed Daniela into the room, looking around at the mess. She remembered Daniela's room back at their childhood home. It was always something of a mess, whereas Victoria's own room was kept in relatively good order. Victoria liked to find things where she'd left them, instead of doing a mad search for where she accidentally laid them. She looked around the room and then started, "I know you're confused and you have every right to be. The last time you saw me, I had a death sentence." Victoria looked into her sister's eyes. "I did die, Daniela," she said, "but I am not dead now. Not entirely. Romina saved me from actual death by making me what she is. A vampire." There it was. The big "v" word. Vampire! Daniela started shaking. The door closed behind her as she shifted her weight against it so that she wasn't falling over. Daniela's gaze dropped to the hollow of her sister's neck, unable to think of anything to say. Mentally, she was going through a string of foul words that would earn her a slap from their mother. Over the past year, Daniela had had too much practice at keeping her thoughts to herself and putting on a blank face regardless of her inner turmoils. Now more than ever, Daniela felt her resolve being tested. "Romina...is a vampire. And...you are a vampire." she whispered finally, after a significant pause. Her voice started to rise again as it all sank in. Victoria had been alive all this time."And you couldn't tell us? Not even that a card? "I am here because of--" Daniela gestured at her sister, "I tried to bring you back." "Daniela, how could I tell you? What do you think mom and dad would do? Do you think they would be happy that I gave up my soul and damned myself?" Victoria returned, "I died. It was easier for the family to believe I died than to realize what I'd done." It sounded logical then and even now, it made sense. But it had been hard. Victoria had abandoned her family in a way. She chose immortality and was moving on where they were stuck in a bad place. A place that her death had placed them in. Daniela admitting that she tried to bring her back created a look of surprise on Victoria's face. What? You did what?" She shook her head, "Daniela, what were you thinking?" Daniela was starting to see the logic in Victoria's decision, slowly working up to maybe even accepting it but her final question was like a direct punch to her heart. Paired with the familiar expression on Victoria's face, Daniela instantly felt like a little girl again. Just like the little girl who was always trying to be more like her older sister. Her lips set into a grim line. "I was thinking I wanted my sister back," she all but spat the words out and pointed to the door, "I can't deal with this right now. I have classes tomorrow. You should go." "Daniela," Victoria said, feeling something rise within her. She didn't know what word could describe it. But she couldn't just leave. She said, "Mom and dad already lost one child's soul, why would you do that with yours?" Because in their upbringing, something like witchcraft was always known as the work of the devil. It couldn't be helped that part of Victoria still believed in that. She never stopped believing in God, after all, but she did stop thinking he cared for her. There was still a chance to save Daniela. "And how was I to know?" Daniela asked with an accusing tone. She had long ago accepted her fate. And while she had spent more nights crying over it than she cared to admit, it had seemed like a price that she would willingly pay for the return of her sister at the time. Now? Daniela did not know what to think. Was this a cruel trick? She had prayed so hard to have her sister back and now here she was. "It is fitting that we meet now I think. I damned myself for a year trying to get you back and just when I thought that I had failed, here you are." Another thought occurred to her just then. "SHE KNEW! Cressida, that witch, knew you were here. She must have known." Without quite meaning to, Daniela turned to Victoria imploringly for her confirmation as she had once done. "What does this have to do with Ms. Hallowfen?" Victoria asked bewildered and then realized it was probably the witch professor that had gotten to get Daniela. Victoria then said, "What business is it of hers to tell you that I am here? You were never meant to be here, Daniela. You were meant to be at home and living with mom and dad. You were all meant to be okay." But they weren't. Her voice was getting a bit louder because she was getting frustrated. She loved her sister but she was angry that she was there. She was angry that her sister had done all of this for her. What if she had died of cancer instead of become a vampire? Would she rip her soul from where it was just to have her back? It had been so long since the two sisters had had an honest conversation and now Daniela remembered how inferior Victoria had always made her feel. She felt her defenses rise and her eyes narrowed a fraction as she took in everything Victoria was saying. "And you were meant to be here? With your new school and new friends? How could we be okay? We-- they almost died with you when..." Daniela gestured as her sister again, momentarily at a loss for words, "Is Romina here? Is that why you chose this instead of m-- us? "After you d-- left, everything changed." Daniela swallowed and lowered a voice as her gaze dropped, "Mom and dad...are getting divorced." "Romina is not here," Victoria said heatedly, "She was to be in Argentina to help you through everything. I know that mom and dad are getting a divorce. I went to Argentina this summer and . . . I saw it. I saw them and I saw you in your room ignoring everyone. I saw Marcos and Sophia." It had been difficult to see. To have to watch at a distance and know that she couldn't just walk in there and make everything better. Victoria shook her head, "Romina won't be here until next year." There was a sadness in the tone. Romina was gone so much and Victoria was pained at how much she missed her. It was something that nobody except another vampire who had their sire would understand. "I'm sorry," she said, "I never meant for that to happen. It would've happened if I chose to die than become this." Daniela found herself hit with a familiar pang of jealousy at her sister's tone. Romina again. It was always Romina. Daniela moved over to her bed and fell on her back on the mattress. There were tears welling in her eyes but she was not going to let her sister see her cry after all this. "I don't know what you want me to say. Do you want me to forgive you? Or say that I wish you were dead as well?" Daniela made a frustrated sound, "You know I will not." "I don't know what I want," Victoria said equally exasperated, "I'm just—I don't know. I will go." She could see the tears in her sister's eyes and also felt the pang of guilt there again. This was only getting worse and she should go. She should've left when Daniela told her to. Victoria didn't know what else to say either. Was she seeking forgiveness? What did that matter anyway? Dying would've just meant that Daniela would've come to this school alone. Or worse, she would've succeeded in bringing her back from the dead and making her more of an abomination. She looked at her sister long and hard before she turned and went out the door, closing it behind her a little rougher than she meant to. |
