Ashes to Ashes
Who: Kana (Open to reactions)
When: Monday afternoon
Where: Rundown building by the pier
Kana had been working all morning, and really didn't have much desire to leave. With her sisters and friends gone away for summer there really wasn't much of a reason to be at the school. Sure she could hang out with Kotone, but she wasn't sure she was really in the mood for that. Her mother was still doing her best to get to know Kana outside of practice with her new found spirit form. She was making progress, but she just wasn't in the mood for that; therefore she would only be going to hang out with her. Instead she decided to just walk around for a while. It wasn't too often that she actually allowed herself to just enjoy the day, and not be focused on some project, so why not just wander around the town?
She wasn't wearing anything incredibly fancy today just a black spaghetti strap top and a hot pink layered skirt that had black lace frill around the bottom. The day was hot, but she usually wasn't too aware of how hot things were since her body pretty much kept at the same temperature at all times.
She didn't have a whole lot of money at the moment since she hadn't gotten paid just yet, but she could still enjoy a bit of window shopping. She had a smile on her face as she wandered the town, a huge contrast to what she had been like a little over a year ago when she was so afraid of her powers. Sure she still had a long way to go, but she actually felt as though she were not actually cursed as she believed prior to coming to St. Margaret's. It was a good feeling. She knew she wasn't normal, but the she wasn't quite as concerned about that now.
She found herself walking by the pier when things began to take a turn for the worse. She had her sketchbook out and was sitting with her legs hanging lazily off the side of one of the docks. Her hands were moving delicately across the paper sketching the scene when she noticed it. There was black smoke coming out of a window in one of the warehouse buildings. She looked around to see if anyone else noticed it, but everyone was still busy working and far too focused on what they were doing to notice it. She pulled her cell phone out of her bag and dialed 911 as she began to run towards the building.
"911 what's your emergency?" the operator said on the other end.
"I think there's a fire inside one of the buildings by the pier," she replied as she began to run to get closer. There was a chance she could get the fire under control, but she still figured it was a good idea to call the professionals.
"Which building?" The operator asked just as Kana heard someone cry for help from inside.
She picked up her pace now afraid someone might be hurt. "Warehouse 13," she told the operator before dropping her phone and her bag and running inside the building before anyone around it could stop her.
This was certainly not her first time inside a burning building, so the fire wasn't really bothering her at all. It did feel kind of nice that for the first time she was inside a building that had not caught fire because of her. "Can you hear me?" she called out trying to figure out which way she needed to go, but all she could hear was the crackling sound of fire burning the crates all around her. She tried to do what she had done when she was with Mickey that night Kitsune had caught fire, but she couldn't stop all of it. She was able to lessen the fire a bit so it was easier to look though, and that was helpful.
"Help!" The voice of a girl screamed from up a set of stairs, "If anyone's there please!" The voice sounded young which only caused Kana to want to move faster.
"Where are you?" She called back as she went up the steps that she believed was where the girl was. The flames around her were getting worse, but they weren't really the issue so much as the building was. It was amazing how fast the flames were spreading now, and she couldn't seem to do much of anything to stop them without having to stop and really concentrate. The only problem really seemed to lie in the fact that the smoke was building up. She kept her head low as she proceeded, but she still took in a few unsavory breaths of smoke filled air which caused her to cough immediately.
"Help!" the girl's voice screamed again this time closer. Kana tried to move faster up the steps; however, when her foot hit the next step it turned charred splinters causing her to fall with only the last two steps to break her fall. She could feel some sort of liquid on her cheek which she assumed was blood.
She needed to calm herself down and focus if she was going to help anyone, so she closed her eyes and focused on the power of her kitsune half. As she did this the surrounding flames began to form around her in a fox shaped aura. She focused on the fire as it was hers. Her fire would not hurt anyone. She would make sure of that. "I'm coming," she said as she rose from the ground and climbed the last two steps. She felt herself revitalized by the flames surrounding her and was able to move with a great deal more speed than she had when she first entered the building. She tried to listen for a sound that wasn't simply the crackling sound of the fire, but since she wasn't a werewolf or a vampire her hearing was only that of a normal humans. "Where are you?" she cried out again.
This time it seemed as though the girl heard her, for she actually cried out in response, "Help! He's stuck!"
Kana moved a little further into a small room most likely used for bookkeeping or something where she found two children surrounded by the flames. One was a girl who seemed to be close to her limit as she was hacking and coughing quite a bit. It likely took all she had to continue calling for help. "He was trying to show me how the fireworks worked," she said before she began to cough some more. The boy was on the floor with his eyes closed lying underneath a file cabinet.
"You can talk later," Kana assured her, "Right now let's just get you guys out of here." She tried to lift the file cabinet off the boy, but unfortunately it was simply too heavy for her. Then while she was attempting to lift it she got another lung full of smoke which caused her to drop to her knees coughing sending a few sparks of flame from her aura shooting out randomly. The young girl was too concerned for the boy to notice, but it at least gave Kana an idea. "I need you to close your eyes for a minute," she told the girl, "Trust me." The girl obeyed without argument as she was only concerned with the boy. Kana closed her eyes and tried to remember everything Mr. Dallas had taught her about focusing her flames. It was kind of difficult to really do it under the best circumstances, but she had to at least try. She began to draw in more of the flames to her body causing the fox form to intensify even more. Now her body was surrounded by an aura of white fire taking on the shape of a fox. She was careful to keep away from the boy's actual body, but she began to run her hand across part of the file cabinet cutting it as though she were using a blowtorch.
"How are you doing that?" the girl asked revealing to Kana that she had opened her eyes and was watching. There was no time to really explain, so Kana just finished and allowed the fire to dissipate so she could actually pick the now freed boy up.
"Go now," she ordered, "But make sure to stay close to me." She lifted the boy up. The both of them couldn't have been older than eight or nine, but Kana was not the most athletic person; therefore, even a small child made moving difficult. The flames had already begun to return when they got to the steps. Parts of the ceiling was now falling as well. Kana stumbled trying to get over the broken step, and the jolt was enough to finally awaken the boy who instantly squeezed Kana tight when he got his first glimpse at the scene. Surprised by the sudden choke hold Kana fell only able to be alright because she landed on a pile of embers that was once a crate with something in it.
"Sorry!" the boy sobbed trying to help Kana up. She looked around to see the entire place fully enveloped in flames now. There was no way the kids would be able to get out of here like this. Kana may be fireproof but these kids weren't.
"I want you two to run to the exit now," she told them both.
"But what about the fire?" the boy asked.
"She's going to get rid of it," the girl said, "She must be a witch from that school."
Kana closed her eyes and began to concentrate. She could feel all of the flames in the building as though each and everyone of them was connected to her. She focused on the ones leading towards the exit and began to create a tunnel for the children to run through.
"I told you," the girl said.
"Run!" Kana yelled unsure of how long she could hold this, so they did.
"Come on fire girl!" they called back as they neared the exit, but just as she took a step towards the exit, the flames became suddenly more violent. There was no problem for her with the heat, but things were collapsing all around her. Then the roof collapsed.
The last thing Kana heard were the cries of the children she had managed to save. Too much smoke had filled her lungs, and the debris that now rested on her back was simply too much for her to bare. She struggled to catch a breath in hopes that someone would help her, but in the end her eyes closed and she saw a strange orb of light where she went to rest.
