Jack was behind his desk, grading assignments. Those who took his Supernatural Creatures class for the first year always had an extensive project due, where they were supposed to give him a report of 20 pages on a race of their choosing. The goal was to surprise him. Either by choosing something odd, either by presenting their findings in an interesting way, either by questioning his teachings in a well-argued way.

He looked up, blinking, needing a moment to recalibrate. "Miss O'Neill," he said, "Of course, do come in." An open door meant any student could come in. Sometimes, Jack could be snappy even then, but he had a soft spot for this girl. She reminded him of home, long ago and long away now. He got up, straightening his jacket. "What's the problem?
