Thread: Keeping Late Hours
WHO: Paxton and James
WHEN: Late Monday night
WHERE: Duke's Diner, the park
Paxton was unlike anyone James had ever met before. What kind of person said no to an overnight trip to Paris? What kind of person insisted that he spend no more than $30 on an evening, and then call it a date? Paxton had a talent for dodging every course of action James tried to take with him. Their chess game had only been the start. Question after question and James had lost his cool only once, declined to answer a question only once, while Paxton only came close to dropping his composure.
The most useful thing James had learned about Paxton was that he couldn't learn anything easily. Paxton was always on his guard.
The thing about money wasn't the money. It was the fame it brought with it. More often than not, James didn't have to pay a cent to get the best service, the highest quality food or drink or even clothes. He had top designers on a waiting list to make him things to wear so that their brands could be represented by James Weatherby, and would then inspire others to invest in it. It was the image and it was utterly ridiculous, but also a lifestyle James had grown accustomed to.
Thirty dollars wasn't even pocket change to James (who didn't carry pocket change anyway). While he could probably make a call and see that their entire evening was free of charge, James knew that Paxton would not count that as fair play. As much as he hated to admit it, James wanted to impress Paxton. He sought his admiration and the longer Paxton withheld it, the more frustrated the young Weatherby became.
Paxton wanted a thirty dollar date? He would get it. Duke's Diner would be a traditional first stop: a $14 entree meant to be shared with two people. But James of course had no interest in the food and didn't even care to touch the flatware. When his coffee was delivered to the table, James used his own handkerchief to wipe off the lip of the cup before taking a sip. Their stay at Duke's Diner was brief.
James looked at Paxton as they walked down the nearly deserted sidewalks of Camden. He was leading them towards a darkened park. Even the street lights along the path at the park entrance had been turned off at that hour. "I paid a city worker ten dollars to leave the gate open for us." James told Paxton, nudging the gate open and, sure enough, the latch came undone and James gestured the demon to proceed him inside.
"How do you feel about geese?"
