A predator always knew when the prey was starting to suspect something. When the rabbit tensed and twitched its ears, the cat pouncing in the underbrush knew that he had to move fast. Caleb was being evasive, and Andrei remembered the first tenet of the school: Don't bite others. Especially don't bite others when they don't want it, because they stir up trouble.
Then Caleb started to hum, and that rational thought gave way to the less rational instinct: but maybe we should try something first.
Andrei didn't step closer, but he agreed: "Yeah, sure." But he did try to find Caleb's eyes and see if he could work his magic, see if he could work on the fascination Caleb had for the world and draw that up, overload Caleb with that odd, peculiar feeling of affection as well.
