Thread: You'll Freeze Your Ass Off
WHO: ALL!
WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 28
WHERE: The lake in the woods
OOC: THE CHART
Every year, just before spring, Ladon House ran the Polar Bear Dive fundraiser, giving all proceeds to the Bleeding Heart Animal Centre in Camden. Every year, the fundraiser made a huge donation to the shelter because, much to no one's surprise, paying money to watch your friends and classmates and teachers jump into freezing water was well worth the cost. For some, getting revenge and turning the nominations around was also money well spent.
All in all this year the Polar Bear Dive raised almost $2,000, a record breaking year for Ladon House. Micah and Rob, along with the other House Mentor and Victoria, who had been a huge help, had gone in person to deliver the check to the animal shelter. Micah had donated the rest to make it an even two grand. The shelter owner had been overwhelmed and couldn't thank them enough. St. Margaret's students were known for frequently volunteering at the shelter and though the owner and the workers there didn't know they were letting werewolves, vampires, and all manner of supernatural creature in with their abandoned and sometimes sick dogs and cats, they looked highly upon the Academy and its members for their good spirits.
Now was the day of the dive itself and everything was set up out on the ice. The lake was not quite frozen solid and Mr. Kaden and Ladon House had carved large holes into the ice with platforms to jump in from. Cheers, screams, and laughter echoed through the otherwise still slumbering winter woods as participants took their leaps off the platform. There were Ladonites on hand to help people out of the water, floating devices for those who couldn't swim, and poles to grab onto that led to ladders to climb out of the ice and hurry to the warm spots.
Professor Hallowen had set up warded areas that were like domes of summer heat. The snow on the ground in these places had melted and grass was growing. Mats were laid out to sit on. Stacks of blankets, heated canisters of hot cocoa with marshmallows on the side, and cubbies to house a change of clothes in were scattered around the shore of the lake.
Mr. Pheres made rounds, the large and majestic centaur a towering presence among the students as he checked for signs of hypothermia or other injuries that may have been sustained by the student body on their dives that they were too frozen to feel. He was currently kneeling next to a young boy who had gouged his knee open on a fall on the rocks, slipping on ice. He wrapped the bandage with large gentle hands, sending a withering look to Micah. The healer didn't like this activity one bit. At least he had Cressida's help with keeping the students alive.
Ms. Menides was present as well. Though most of the students and staff believed she had refused the three nominations she'd received, the Headmistress was known to surprise people. There was a pool going on whether or not she would actually take the dives and the students and staff kept tabs on her whereabouts as she meandered around the lake.
"Don't forget to warm up between jumps!" Kaden called out, his voice easily heard over the lake as he passed from one diving hole to another. Kaden was aware of the dangerous nature of the event, and wanted to ensure no one was seriously injured or became ill. One often didn't know when cold was too cold. The body simply became numb to it. Even vampires were in danger of their joints locking up and preventing them from swimming to the ladder. That was why there was a Ladon student assigned at each hole to make sure whoever dove in came up and got out once more.
Mr. Kaden's flannel shirt was unbuttoned and his skin and hair were damp, having already taken two of the five dives he was owed. He chuckled as he tossed a heated towel around the shoulders of a student emerging from the ice, teeth chattering. "And drink some cocoa. It's good for the soul." The boy ran towards the heated grassy area and Kaden glanced around for Jack. The bet was still on and though he knew he was going to lose, he would lose while saying he would win. Afterwards he and Jack and Cressida would have a drink together and have a good laugh about it. It was a warming thought that kept the cold away. Maybe they'd even convince Ms. Menides to join them.
