Thread: Golden Gifts
WHO: Ashton Hartley and James Weatherby
WHEN: Dec. 18
WHERE: Ashton's room, Hydra Dorm
It was an experiment, if anything. Since learning of Ashton's true... what was it, species? Identity? True self? James had been fascinated by him. It was one thing to attend the same school as a real live fire breathing dragon, but quite another to talk to him, be friends with him, become allies and, who knew, maybe one day have him around to do his bidding. James aimed high, but it all came down to groundwork. The long game. He planned long term and there were small steps, small battles to win along the way. The first one of these, when it came to the powerful and fearsome black dragon, was to gain trust.
Animals were all the same, James thought. They needed to be fed, they needed to be sheltered, and they needed to mate. In this case, Ashton had all of these covered but one. James had seen Ashton converse with others. He knew the dragon was highly intelligent. It was one of the reasons he wanted him around, quite honestly. But there was also parts of Ashton that were very childlike. Very naive. He was not wise to the world like others were. James suspected, and had seen evidence of Barclay's influence on Ashton. He'd seen them appear at the party together, and even though Davian had been the one who got the payment for the dragon's presence, James was not fooled. Ashton came because Barclay came.
The exact depth of their relationship was something James wanted to explore. Barclay was already on James' payroll, as it were. James collected powerful and influential people and the druid was on the list. Barclay was even smart enough to know that a gift was not just a gift. James was here now, in Hydra House, to try the same thing on the dragon. He would investigate Barclay's depth of connection with Ashton at a later date.
Gold. Not just a Tolkien tale or myth, but actual fact that dragons craved it. James had a few experiments in mind with his gift, and he was doing it himself rather than sending an emissary. It wasn't often that the Weatherby heir took matters into his own hands and got them dirty, but as the adage went, when you wanted something done right, you did it yourself. He would not be taking any chances with Ashton.
Knocking on Ashton's door, James unbuttoned his coat and pulled the scarf loose. It wasn't cold outside for the vampire, but since when had clothes ever been about practical application? The gift of gold was tucked away, out of sight under his jacket. This wasn't just going to be a drop off. He wanted to get inside Ashton's room and have a one on one talk with him while dangling the promise of gold in front of his nose. Frankly, James was rather excited to proceed.
