Jae took his words as a compliment and smiled, "I don't think many have been in a situation where they are not in school. Unless it is common for people to be home-schooled?" She really didn't know a lot about other species and what lifestyles they had. Most people here seemed comfortable with the idea of school, and some days she felt anxious about classes actually starting and that it might not be good for her at all.
She watched as the teacher played around with one of the xylophone mallets and then inquired after her . . . problem. "Well enough," she admitted, "there was . . . one day. I went to my room feeling sick though. Spent the rest of the day there." Whatever Ms. Menides did to her, it worked. Jae, however, felt it was a double-edged sword. On one hand it stopped her from following through, but on the other, the sick feeling made her wonder how many days of school she might miss. So far her exposure to humans was limited.
