Witch Island. Eighteen acres of wooded mystery off the coast of Maine near South Bristol. Bert's Vampires in History and Literature class left the grounds of St. Margaret's on Friday morning in a bus. They stopped once for lunch, once more for an emergency bathroom break, and arrived in South Bristol a few hours after noon. Bert had been immensely grateful for having Mr. Cavanauh along to meet their transport over the water to the island, as Bert hardly looked the part of teacher. Most of his class looked older than him. The boat ride was fairly quick and at the end of it, they were left behind on the island's beach with a few supplies to get them through the next couple days.
Bert had them start off by setting up camp. First, they designated a couple of specific spots in the woods as bathrooms, an important first step as there were already a couple students who were feeling nature's call. Next, they began to set up camp on the beach, nearsighted the treeline. Some students build a fire ring, others set up tents, girls' tents on one sire of the fire ring, boys' on the other side. There were enough tents to sleep about three or four people per tent with not much room to spare. There would be more room than that actually, since the vampires didn't need sleep and several might foregoe the tents altogether.
Once camp was set and a modest dinner was had, Bert explained the adgenda and boundaries for the weekend. The schedule was fairly relaxed. There would be a couple of scheduled hikes and they would gather around meal times, but they were otherwise free to explore and play and hopefully research too, as Bert reminded them of the purpose of their trip. The island had supernatural history and they were to try and find evidence of that, especially evidence concerning the island's one-time resident of long ago, a purported witch, though she might have been something else entirely.
A few rules were set out for the students. No girls in the boys' tents, no boys in the girls'. No flying, a rule specifically set for the angel in the group. No swimming except for in groups of three or more. Other rules were explained as well, Mr. Cavanaugh chiming in as needed. Once that was done, the adults switched gears to something a little more relaxing and hopefully fun. An early evening hike, followed by a campfire!
