Alice was tired. Everyday. She got up in the morning with Frank, they went through their routine, left for work, ran around the Ministry doing paperwork, following leads, going out on assignment, then came home. By lunchtime these days, Alice was always ready for a nap. But she never seemed to have the time for one, and apparently she couldn't keep mainlining caffeine, not after she found out why she was always exhausted. And that reason was...complicated. Alice Fawley had never wanted to be a breeder. She'd always imagined that she might have children some day, but it was always in the future, years away. She'd be an Auror for a decade or two, move up in the ranks, become Head Auror or higher. Then she'd have children, after her career was solidified. Not now, only three years after her training ended. Yet, there she was, three days past a pregnancy test, waiting for the right opportunity to tell her husband. It probably should have been easier; she'd found out on a Friday, leaving them the whole weekend at home, but she hadn't been able to do it; she hadn't known what to say, or how she felt about it. For the most part, she still didn't. On the one hand, she didn't want children yet. She wanted to work and put Death Eaters in Azkaban. The Order needed her, and her child needed to grow up in a world without the threat of evil. But she also wanted Frank to get to experience fatherhood. She knew she would be great at it. Alice had her doubts about herself as a mother sometimes, but never about him. She was sure he would be excited and happy, no matter what the timing was. And still she was afraid to tell him, though she couldn't explain to herself why. After a weekend of doing mostly sleeping, and another exhausting day at work, Alice came home before Frank and immediately crawled into bed, knowing she needed to tell Frank (if for no reason than to keep from being so distracted), but perfectly content to take a nap until he returned. She'd figure out then if and when she'd tell him. |
