WHO: Regulus Black, narrative
WHAT: Alerting Dumbledore to the DE plan
WHEN: 5th August late afternoon
WHERE: Grimmauld Place, his room
RATING|STATUS: PG-13, mention of killing children but nothing graphic
Regulus hadn't been able to eat or sleep or relax since he'd arrived home from the last Death Eater meeting, long after the ache in his Dark Mark had ebbed away. He couldn't believe what he'd heard, the callous disregard for the lives of children who weren't even seen as such by the people there. He hadn't imagined that the group would resort to terrorism of that kind; he was beginning to realise he'd been completely wrong in agreeing to join them because they weren't interested in keeping the Wizarding World safe at all. Oh they might claim that as their cause but it was only an excuse to shed blood and spread fear and elevate themselves in their own eyes. Regulus had been taught to believe that Muggles were dangerous; these wizards were claiming they weren't - 'parasitic', 'weakest of magic', 'polluted veins', 'weakness of Muggle blood' - these weren't words to describe an enemy but an insect or an animal, something to be pitied and easily exterminated.
They wanted to attack children. He'd thought of the Muggles as cowards, attacking only young women who hadn't done anything wrong, dragging them out of their homes as an entire town and finding cruel ways to put them to death. And now here he was, part of a plan to contain children in one place ignorant to their fate and allow them to be killed by adults who had judged them as what? Unworthy? Pitiful? Certainly not dangerous. This wasn't closing the Wizarding World off from the Muggle one, this was killing for the sake of it, this was elitism at it's very basest level. They'd set fire to that house in Sunderland just to watch it burn.
Nothing had been sitting well with him; he didn't want to allow the slaughter of some innocent kids just because he was too much of a coward to speak out, just because it might put his own family at risk of coming under the Dark Lord's wrath. It had taken him a while to formulate a plan and he didn't like the one he'd come up with but it was all he had.
He took out a piece of parchment and a quill and set about writing:
'easier to destroy the nest than a few individuals. It made poor sense but it was the most Regulus thought he could write without risking being discovered while still being a warning. If the Obliviation charm went wrong or didn't go deep enough then anything he remembered should only look like agreement to what had been discussed that night. Even if Dumbledore took the note to be gloating at least he'd be on full alert. He wanted to do more but the last thing he wanted was to create evidence that would cause his own downfall; he was risking punishment just sabotaging the plan in the first place, knowing that he was supposed to be involved in the plan by protecting the Purebloods - he'd still have to pretend to do so, just in case the plan was carried out, just in case it wasn't.
