In one store and looking around. John shook his head and headed out. He had searched all over now. Had been in near every jewelry shop in Lawrence, and had even driven out to surrounding towns. This may have been an easy task for most men, go into a shop and point to one and say they wanted that one. John Winchester however was a very particular, picky man. He wanted it to be perfect, wanting thought into it. Not just a quick go in and select what was there. Mary deserved better then that. In his eyes she deserved the best and that's what she'd get from him.
He was getting worried however, he was running out of time. Soon he'd have to go back over to Vietnam and it was beginning to get discouraging. He was half tempted to just grab the next one he saw and be done with it. He knew however he couldn't do that, it wouldn't mean as much if he did. Just when John was about to give up he went into the last store and looked around then stopped and smiled.
There it was. The perfect ring. It was simple, but it spoke John and Mary. A single round diamond that sparkled in the light and reflected his face in gentle fragments. He knew she'd love it. White gold that shined like it had just been made, polished lovingly. He knew that that ring was the one he wanted. He made no hesitation in buying it. He paid for it and thanked the man and headed out. He was glad he found it because tonight he was taking her out to dinner.
He felt like there was a hole burning in his pocket as they sat through dinner. He wanted to wait until dessert to ask. His leg bounded and she looked at him and frowned worried about his nervousness.
"John you alright?"
"I'm fine Mary."
"You sure? Your leg is bouncing a mile a minute."
"Sorry. And yes I am sure baby."
He gave her a reassuring smile and willed his leg to stop. She eyed him a moment and smiled then and went back to eating as his fingers reached into his pocket and felt over the soft felt of the box as he watched her. She looked stunning as always. Her hair was up exposing her neck that he suddenly wanted to kiss and nuzzle into. A off white dress that clung to her yet flowed freely down around her legs. He looked to her hands and imagined the ring sitting on her left ring finger and his lips twitched into a smile.
"John? John?"
"Huh?"
She laughed then and shook her head. "The waiter asked if we were ready for dessert."
"Oh yes. We are."
He ordered a piece of black forest cake and let Mary order what she wanted and waited. Again it felt like his pocket was on fire, felt like the ring heated up and melted through the box and was now pressed against his skin. Once the desserts were put down and the waiter left John changed his mind, no he knew the perfect place. He ate quickly and waited for Mary. Once she was done he stood then and took her hand.
"I have one more place to take you Mary."
"John what are you up to?"
"You'll see."
He took her out to his car then and held the door open for her and slipped in. They drove her a bit and ended up at their place. Elton Ridge. Mary smiled and slipped out with him and looked up at the sky then.
"It's so beautiful tonight."
"So are you Mary. I love you."
She turned to him and smiled. "I love you too John."
He dropped down then on one knee and her eyes went wide and her hand covered her mouth as he pulled the ring box out and opened it looking to her with a smile. He could already see her eyes tearing up.
"Mary will you do me the honor of being my wife?"
"Oh John." Her voice came out in a choked cry as she moved and flung her arms around his neck. "Yes! Oh my god. Yes I will marry you!"
He held her against him then and smiled. She felt so right against him. He knew they were meant to be together. Though he did fear her saying no. He slipped the ring on her finger and smiled wiping the tears that were now streaming down her cheeks and kissed her softly.
"You've made me a very happy man Mary."
"You always make me happy John."
They sat there on the hood of the car, Mary in his lap snuggled close for a bit before he took her home. He kissed her deeply as he dropped her off at her door and pulled away. He stroked her cheek then as she pulled him inside. He slept there in her ned that night with her snuggled into him. He knew then this was perfection.
