One of the worst parts about George's job was having to harvest the souls of children. She hated it...but then again, being a Reaper wasn't exactly her ideal job. She had died, and then she'd been told "Congratulations, you don't get to move on. You get to stay here and take people's souls and help them move on into the next life".
The Croats had gotten a little girl. No matter how many times she'd seen it, it broke George's heart to have to touch the little girl moments before she'd die, and take her soul. She closed her eyes when the Croats attacked the girl. She couldn't bear to watch.
The little girl stood next to George seconds later, staring at her body in fear.
"I died...but it's too early..." She looked at George, tears in her eyes. "I want my Mommy! I wanna go home!"
George placed a hand on the girl's shoulder. "You're going to a better place," she said. Sure, she didn't know what happened when someone crossed over, but she knew it was probably better than this shit. She took the little girl's hand, leading her to a bright light.
The little girl squeezed George's hand. "You promise?"
"I promise."
Reluctantly, the little girl let go of George's hand, and stepped into the light, vanishing from George's sight.
George perked her head up. She felt someone else here...someone not human.
Another Reaper? She hadn't seen any others like her...well, in a long time.
George went to go check it out, keeping her eyes peeled for someone who was living...but not quite really alive.
