"I know. Don't try and communicate with him, he'll be frightened." Micha sent a wave of reassurance toward their son, then focused her attention back on Steve. "It is loud, but you can do this Steve. Imagine a wall around you, so high and so thick that it blocks out all voices but what you choose to listen to. Now imagine a window in that wall where you can see me and hear my voice."
This would be a crude mental barrier, but there wasn't time for subtle. And likely this would all be temporary anyway.
