The last time Jake had tried something like this, Izzy had found him in a shitload of agony, going back to his chair just to get a break from the pain shooting through his legs and she'd had to do his job for him.
This time was different. He could use his legs now. Not much, but enough to help him climb the stairs one at a time. He was able to push up, so his arms weren't taking all of the strain, and he didn't have to trail his legs behind him, so there was no smacking them off the risers every time. And when he leaned down after climbing up each stair to grab his folded-up chair, his back didn't ache as he sat up straight and moved the chair up with him. Sure, it was taking time, but he was doing it.
Once he got within easy reach of the top of the stairs, he lifted his chair and twisted round as he sat up, sliding the chair onto the landing as he stretched to push it up the last five steps. He took a quick break after that, taking a minute to check his phone. When he was finished, the phone went back into his pocket and he wondered if his idea was going to work. He loved being in his Avatar, more than he had words to say, and he'd have spent every hour of every day in it if it was possible, but he was more than aware of how the people in New York reacted when he was ten foot tall and blue. Perhaps if he looked human and sort-of non-threatening, he could talk to people easier? He could find out if people knew where Tommy or Jacob were, and they wouldn't be obviously thinking "Holy fuck, that guy's an alien, is he gonna break more of the city?" or "Fucking mutie freak."
He kept pushing himself up the stairs as he thought, and he had only two steps to go when he heard someone approaching. Glancing down, he smiled when he saw who it was. "Kaltxi, Sook," he called down to her, and lifted his legs up to the next step.
