Who: Lacey and open!
Where: Food court
When: Monday, October 11th.
What:  Thanksgiving Dinner
Status: Open to threads and sub-threads
Warnings:  None.

Lacey set out the food, buffet-style, feeling a little pang of sadness as she noticed her hand, specifically her ring-less finger.  Daniel had been gone a long time, years, and she'd come to accept that he wasn't coming back.   She no longer grieved from him.   She did have the occasional moment when she missed what might have been.  Plus, it was thanksgiving, sort of their holiday; they'd even be engaged in the fall.

Lacey pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind.   This was the time of year to be thankful.   She had seen and done so much more that she ever thought she would in Dog River.   She had a station full of people to appreciate and things were calmer than they had been last year.   They should all find a way to be like family on the station, in her opinion.  She began carving the turkey and smiled as some of those people began to arrive.  "C'mon over and fill up a plate."

Dan made his way through the food court, taking advantage of all the chair backs along his way to help with his walking. Jessica had healed his leg, yes, but she hadn't fixed it. So there was one hell of a scar, all the way down to the bone, and there were muscles and tendons that were all fucked up, and there was pain. Of course. The Overlook had never given him anything other than pain, really. There was also a limp that was always there. It wasn't always as pronounced as it was at the moment, but he had been trying to do physio stuff earlier, so the leg was complaining.

Still, he'd taken a shower and some pills and now there was to be a hell of a lot of good food. He wasn't going to stay away, he wasn't crazy... well, not in that way, anyway. He was going to sit down for a few minutes before he went to get food, though. Stupid leg.

Abra knew Dan was there, knew he was in pain and more, all before walking into the food court.   She went directly to his table and sat down across from him.  She didn't need to ask to join him.  Any Dan was still uncle Dan to her.    "No food?"   She asked teasingly.   "You know you don't have to get up to get it."

She tilted her head in the direction of the buffet where a plate floated away from the stack of them.  "It's not like home.  People will think it's normal.  Or they'll think it's cool.  You can fill it up with turkey, stuffing, potatoes, even vegetables, and stay right here."

Dan would have been upset if she hadn't joined him, to be fair. He smiled as she sat down and stopped trying to knead and rub at the sorer part of his thigh since it didn't seem to do anything anyway, and then Abra spoke.

"I was just taking a break," he pointed out, even as he watched the floating plate. Holy shit, just how strong was she? "I've, uh. I've never been able to do that, Abra," he told her, "although I gotta say, it seems pretty damn handy." The number of times he'd gotten himself comfy in bed, only to realize that the book he'd been reading was over on the bookcase by the blackboard wall, or his glass of water was left by the sink in the bathroom...

"It's handy now that I don't break plates or send them up to the ceiling."   Abra said with a smile.  "There are teachers here that help with that sort of thing.  You're one of the teachers.  Or the other you was.  He helped with the telepathy part."

She carefully filled the plate with various appetisers, then floated the plate over to their table, landing it gently between them.  "Never done it?  Have you tried?  Back home, we gave Rose a little push."   Her smile grew wider.  It was a nice memory, killing that monster.  "Actually it was a big push.  We were strongest together."

God, the idea of him teaching kids anything, except maybe how not to spend your teenage years or your twenties... or your thirties, Christ. He almost laughed, except he could see one of the classes in a memory, and those kids from Derry asking questions and... that was pretty cool, actually.

The plate settled down onto the table, and then Abra was talking again. "Well, I mean. I might have, back when I was a little kid, but I don't really remember," he admitted, before telling her something he'd never told anyone else before. "I made my eyes change color, after... afterwards. I had brown eyes as a kid, but my mom, she couldn't stand to see them after my dad died so I turned them blue. But I don't think that's the same as moving plates or spoons up to the ceiling or anything like that. And then I, I just stopped using my Shine. Until you showed up."

He lifted something small off of the plate and popped it in his mouth after all that talking, before looking back over at his maybe-niece. "How did you deal with her, then? No... us. How did we deal with her?"

Abra picked up one of the mini cornbread muffins and put it in her mouth, eating it as she listened to Dan.   After she finished, she grinned.  "Eyes changing colour?  Cool.  I'll have to try that one."   She'd have to do it soon too, or the station might do it for her.  She shrugged.  "Shine's supposed to get weaker as you get older, isn't it?  Whether you use it or not.  I think maybe it's different here.  Like there's so much magic on this station that it boosts shine.  It's not just me.  Bill and all his friends' shines got stronger here too."

"We pushed her off the roof of the world."   Abra answered, sending him an image of Rose's fall and death.   "The roof of the world was a place built where the overlook used to be.  It was your idea to go there."

He nodded at her question; he wasn't nearly as strong as he'd been as a kid, but then again, he'd actively stopped doing anything consciously with his Shine for a long time. Innate ability or not, a lack of practice at doing something was bound to make it weaker, right? "Bill and his friends, they're the Derry kids, aren't they? From your class."

He'd been about to lift one of the cornbread muffins to try them, when Abra showed him how she'd helped his other self deal with Rose. He grabbed hold of the image and looked closely at it, both his eyes briefly clouding over as he used his Shine to amplify and see all the details; yes, watching Rose fall to her death was amazingly satisfying and he might just replay that part later, but the scenery around where it happened was different. He knew that the Overlook's outcome had been different for Abra and her Dan, but he didn't recognize those mountains at all. Weird.

He still didn't like them, though.

In response, he showed her his memory of how he'd dealt with Rose, by letting all the ghosts in his lockboxes out and then watching as they tore her apart and fed on her Steam. He stopped the memory just as they all turned to face him, though. "That was the last thing I saw before, well... here."

"Yeah, that's them."   Abra smiled, snacking and sending him images of her and the boys from Derry riding bikes.  "Bill was the first one to show up.  The others didn't come until later.  And there's a girl in our class who's got something like shine.  She's really strong.  We call ourselves losers, not in a bad way.  That's what the Derry kids already called themselves."

Abra looked just as closely at the image he sent, grinning as Rose died.  No matter how it happened, it was always very satisfying. Her grin faded.  So many ghosts.  There were a few she recognised, either from evicting them from Dan's head or stories that she'd been told.    She tried to look beyond the ghosts, to the staircase and more.   She was searching for her own face.  She'd never leave her Uncle alone with that monster and never miss the chance to get revenge for the baseball boy and all the rest of the children. "Where was I?"  She asked softly.

"I told you to leave. The Knot had already killed Billy and... they'd killed enough people, and Rose wanted you dead. There was no way I was letting her get near you," he explained, only hesitating when he almost said about Abra's dad being killed by the Crow. He had no problem with telling her anything else about what happened on his side of things, but telling someone that a version of their dad died? That wasn't needed.

He smiled a little after that, humorless and somewhat sad. "They'd missed me when I was growing up. I guess the Overlook saved me from the Knot. Weird, huh? If I hadn't stopped using my Shine when I did, they'd have found me and I'd have just been another missing kid on the side of a milk carton or the back of one of those flyers. But Rose was distracted enough by me because of that, so you managed to get away from her. And then she was gone."

Abra looked at Dan sadly.  "I'm sorry."   There was a small angry voice in the back of her mind, a temptation to blame him for telling her to leave.   It wasn't fair.   She hadn't really been there at the end in her timeline, either.   Just a projection.  "He made it in our timeline.  I used to think of him as being on pause back home.  Along with everyone else.  But this place is home now, so I think the people back home have a different me with them."

Abra frowned for a moment.  Was there something when she mentioned the people back home?  A dark spot in Dan, like a secret.  She might have to ask about it later.  She didn't want to ruin Thanksgiving.

Abra looked at him.  "I never really thought about why the didn't get you, or the man you told me about - Dick. Maybe it was supposed to happen that way.  Like fate knew you needed him and I needed you.  It all happened so the Knot would be destroyed."    She suggested slowly.  She didn't want him to think she saw the Overlook as good.  More like it was necessary.

(OOC: Sorry for the lateness!)

Reeve was nervous coming to such an event. It was a trait he had since he much younger, but everyone here would be younger versions of what he knew! He knew Lacey made some of the best food ever, though so why wouldn't he show up for that, at least?

He made sure to be dressed up nicely, as this was a Thanksgiving feast. Making his way into the main Food Court, he did his best to keep himself hidden without turning invisible. His face was red as a tomato. The young Ghostly man was hungry, and he couldn't say no to Lacey's cooking. That was impossible. But he didn't want to disturb anything around him. So, he tried his best to be as stealthy as he could, once again; without going invisible, that would probably draw more attention than not. Once he filled his plate with everything he want, which was a lot, Reeve headed to the furthest table he could find.

Lacey had taken a break so she could join in the meal and enjoy herself.  She couldn't help noticing Reeve walking past her table.  That wouldn't do.  He must want to be around other people or he would have requested the take-out option.   Plus, she wanted company and she did tend to assume others had the same outlook as her.  Different points of view still passed her by on occasion.

Lacey waved to him, and gestured to the empty chairs across from her.  "There's plenty of room to sit here.  C'mon."    She wasn't bossy like they'd told her in Dog River.   She was helpful.  That was it.

He was kind of hoping Mack or Henry would show up to this event, but he wasn't sure since none of them had really talked about meeting up here. But, he still hoped.

Reeve stopped dead in his tracks when he heard Lacey's voice. There went his plan of being stealthy! Turning on his heel, his face still red as a tomato, being the awkward young adult that he was. "Oh! Uhm... Hi, Ms. Burrows.." Reeve offered her a small smile before looking to the chairs across from her, then back to her. "O-okay." He never thought of her as bossy or anything like that. Slowly, he pulled out the chair directly across from her, sitting in it as he put his plate on the table.

Binx, his BINCS unit took the chair beside him, the robotic cat's eyes reaching just over the table, though he was mostly eyeing the turkey. "You know you're giving me some of that, right?" The 'cat' spoke sardonically. Reeve ignored him as he looked to Lacey.

"Uhm... Thank you. For the food, Ms. Burrows. I always liked yours a lot, in my time." Reeve was trying his best not to be awkward, but it was so natural to him. "I'm glad you got the chance to sit down and eat."

"Lacey.  Please, call me Lacey."   Lacey said with a smile.   She had never been one to be formal and last names always sounded a bit unfriendly to her, having been used to places where everyone knew everyone else's name.

She looked over at the bincs.  "There's plenty more..if you eat."  She commented, not sure if the robotic cat was kidding.  She was being genuine.  There was a huge amount of food. Part of the fun of Thanksgiving was making too much and then deciding what to do with the leftovers.

"Oh, I'm happy to hear that!"   Lacey exclaimed, returning her attention to Reeve.  "Glad I didn't become some strange old line dancing lady in a hat, in the future."  As soon as the words left her mouth, she remembered that not everyone chose to watch that odd sitcom about her life.  "That's a long story."

She nodded.  "I always try to make sure I can enjoy meals with others.  It was hard to do that in my cafe back home, you know, cause I needed to make money.  That's one of the great things about being here.  No profits or taxes to worry about."

"Oh, right... Lacey." Reeve gave her a smile, he was taught to respect his elders. Though, he did realize that she was much younger now, but he wasn't going to say that!

Binx looked back at Lacey, a mischievous look on his kitty face. "I was just kidding, I don't need to eat, but thank you. Plus, it's more fun when to take from him. Hskhskhsk."

His head tilted to the side, obviously not getting her reference. But, that was okay, it made him chuckle a little bit. "No, no dancing around in a hat. But, you've always been kind and generous, especially to us kids."

"Good! I'm glad you get the chance to do this. I remember you always had a chance to come and sit with us when my mom and dad brought me about." Reeve gave her a genuine smile, those were happy memories for him. "So, what's it like at this point in time?"

That was a relief.  Lacey could practically hear her friends back home starting an argument over whether or not robotic cats and food.  They did get into the silliest discussions over robots, werewolves and other things that didn't even exist in her world.  She had never understood any of it, even when it had all been theory.

"That's good news too.  I haven't always been good with kids."  Lacey commented.  Her attempts at babysitting and coaching soccer had been disastrous in their own ways. "I guess the island and the station's made me better at that, since there's so many around."

"Well, there's been some craziness.  Isn't that always the way with the station?"  Lacey smiled.  "It's good though.  Everyone seems to be getting along now, which is the way it should be."

Reeve and Binx looked at her while she contemplated her own past, the both of them tilted their heads to the side slightly. But, it was only for less than a moment.

"Well, you were good with me, at least?" Reeve facetiously asked as thought for a moment, had she ever babysat for his parents? Maybe, probably. It was hard to remember everything about his life, given the time dilution and all. Either way, he still offered her another smile.

"Yeah, it is. Things do get kind of crazy sometimes.." He left it at that. Reeve mentioned when he first showed up that he wasn't going to say a word about the future to anyone in the present. It could screw up the timeline. "But, I'm gla-"

"Right? That Werewolf Door of '38 was something else!" Binx spoke rather bluntly. The robotic cat didn't really seem to care about the timeline.

"Seriously?" Reeve looked down at his companion, the 'cat' seemed to just shrug. "I'm so sorry, M... Lacey. We're not supposed to talk about the future." His cheeks turned red as he was embarrassed by his companion's lack of tact. "But, other than the usual craziness... Is everything alright?"

Lacey chucked.  "I must have made you some of my macaroodles while you were growing up."  They were a staple on her kids menu, a mac and cheese dish that she insisted was much better than kraft dinner.   They'd helped soothe things over in Dog River after the soccer misunderstanding.  "Kids always like those."

"Werewolf door?"   Lacey asked.   "Was it a door with werewolves or a door where you got to be werewolves?   Were there any robots?"   She was more curious about the first question than the second, but Hank would have wanted her to ask.

Lacey shrugged.  "I don't see the harm.  Now that you've come back in time, there's a new timeline-thingy."  There was probably a more technical term.   She could check on that later.  "Well, to be honest.  I'm not sure if it's the usual craziness.   I've seen shadows that seem to move.  That's a relatively new one."

"And I've aways enjoyed them." Reeve spoke with an awkward smile as he took a piece of Turkey into his mouth. "But, then again, I also enjoyed the mini-hamburgers you made." His smile widened a little until...

"No, no.. What?" His attention turned to Binx, glaring at the robotic cat. "What?" "I.... I can't talk about that, I'm sorry." "I could, but I won't. Just imagine what you will, it's a few years off." "BINX!!!" Reeve frowned to the 'cat' before turning back to Lacey. "I... I am so sorry, he has a mind of his own..."

"So, this is the time with the shadows things? It's... Hard for me, I was only a little kid during this time." He knew what had happened ended, and how it played out, but he couldn't say anything about it. So, he took a fork full of Stuffing and shoved it into his mouth in a rather awkward way.

"Oh, yes, my sliders.  They're just as good as my full size ones.   It's so much easier to make them here, where no one complains if I put lettuce on them."   Lacey said with a smile.   Certain people back home wouldn't have stood for anything green on a burger.   "I can even get more creative with the toppings."

Lacey finished a mouthful of food and then smirked.  "Isn't his having a mind the point?  I have a robot that looks like a dog that helps me with the dishes, but there's no real mind there.  He wouldn't make a good dining companion."

"I guess that rules out a visit from Peter Pan."   Lacey joked.  "A kid would have remembered that."

"Yes, Sliders!" The word had gotten away from when. "Well, yes, the full sized ones are amazing as well, but the sliders are a great grab and go meal!" Reeve smiled a little more as Lacey of getting more creative. "How so? I mean, you brought in onion rings and guac to one... Oh, man! So good!" Ever his father's son.

Reeve was intrigued about her robot dog. "Is.. Your robot dog around? I'm sure I could ask my uncle Johnn to take a look at him?"

Binx blinked a little, wow, she stood up for him. "Yeah, that is the point. But, us BINCS' took a while before we gained autonomy, especially after what happened with Frederick." Though he couldn't physically, his tone suggested an eye roll. "Binx..." "Yeah, yeah, I know."

"Yeah, well, I was only almost 2 during this time. I couldn't really remember, and I don't think anything happened to me?" Reeve was unsure. "But, it's good to know everyone got through it!" D'oh! He accidentally revealed something without even realizing it!

"That sounds like one I've been working on! Caramelized onions, avocado and havarti." Lacey exclaimed. "I must have switched it up to onion rings and guac somewhere along the line." She smiled. "I've also been thinking of one with grilled pineapple and banana peppers."

Lacey nodded. "He's in the kitchen, near the dishwasher. He's not broken or anything." He was more like part of the dishwasher. "He came with the station, like the machines that clear the tables." It would give her a good shock if all the machines started talking.

"We always do." Lacey said in her upbeat fashion. It might not be technically true. They had lost people. Still, they always adjusted and went on, and that was important. "But you are saying there'll be something to get through." She added, her cheerfulness dropping slightly.

He couldn't help but smile as she exclaimed, he was happy to see her so excited. Not that she wasn't during his time, but it was still nice to experience. Reeve enjoyed these interactions with people in their pasts.

"I don't know about pineapple but the rest of it sounds amazing." Did she make burgers like that in her future? He couldn't fully remember, but either way it sounded delicious. "Especially the Havarti." He spoke that out loud instead of in his head without realizing it, but he just went with the statement because it worked either way.

"Oh okay. Well, if he ever starts acting up or something, just asked Uncle Johnn to look at him. That's sort of his thing." Reeve's smile widened even more. "Yeah, he did create us after all, and we're pretty great." Binx gave Lacey a wink.

Reeve could tell there was a hint of sadness behind her upbeat stance. That was alright to him. Reeve sighed as he set his silverware down calmly. He wasn't supposed to say anything, but now it couldn't be helped, really. "I'm from twenty years in the future, Lacey. There are many things that we've had to go through in that time." He frowned a little as he made eye contact with her, not because everything they all went through was bad, per say, but he divulged information he didn't want to. "But, even in the 'many things' most of it was good. I mean, I'm here, right?" Reeve tried his best to reassure her.
