Telling Isabel off had been so cathartic that she should have slept like a baby. Especially after the way Rawdon had responded to it. She hadn't expected that. She'd expected him to maybe be a little mad, not heavily aroused. It meant she didn't have to regret a single thing. So she should have slept like a baby. Except there was no such thing, not in her world, not in her head. Sure she had a few nights, every now and then. And nights that Rawdon spent beside her were more restful than the ones without. But they were few and far between completely quiet. And it was in the quiet contentment that The Dreams came. The screams in her head. The blood. The smell of burning flesh. The faces. The dead faces. But the ever dutiful AI, the one that had replaced EDI, JARVIS sounded soft in her ear. "Ma'am. Commander. You need to wake up. It's just a dream, but you are nearing the point when you thrash, and you requested to be woke up before that started." It was over the implanted omnitool in her ear, so not to wake up Rawdon, so he wouldn't hear the ship's AI, but if her response was loud enough he'd hear that. Shepard sucked in a deep breath in through her nose, like she had been holding it. And she might have been. She sat bolt up right in bed. The blanket puddled at her waist, though her bedroom was warm gooseflesh rose up on her exposed skin, making her nipples stand out. Deep breaths, in, out, in, out. It wasn't helping. She felt around the floor at the side of the bed, grabbing for what felt like a shirt, inside out, backward, it didn't matter. She pulled it up over her head. Jolting up out of the bed she ran for her bathroom and just did manage to hit the close button before she lost the contents of her stomach. She didn't know how long she sat there, her forehead pressed against the cool metal, of the toilet. Not doing more than breathing, and taking in the coolness of the floor, and wall at her back. "JARVIS, keep an eye on him. Make sure to wake him ten seconds before you did me, if he goes into those dreams." "Yes ma'am." |
