Well. This was a lot to take in. Rohan felt glued to his phone as he watched the myriad of commentary pour in across Katherine's post. His brows had been knit together for about an hour as he read each reply friends made, read Katherine's, and each time he seemed to sigh a little heavier. This was too much. Why didn't anyone know how to stop? Having clearly remembered the Awkward Teen Phase of his life he could see quite plainly when Katherine started to shut down in a conversation. He understood how hard it must have been to hear nice things told about yourself when you didn't believe it. While it was not quite the same, he had not been thrust forward in time at a young age, Rohan knew all too well what it was like to have low self-esteem and to hate yourself. Her scant replies of "I'm not like that" or "I'm weird" and "I'm a freak" broke his heart.
He had those thoughts at that age, too. Rohan was not always so charming. Rohan was not always so confident in himself. No matter how kind your fellow Islanders were it did not make up your mind that you weren't an oddball when you were different, even if literally the franchising phrase for the Island should have been "We're All Unique! Love Yourself!" He had been a scrawny little kid until that testosterone really kicked in and he started to work out. He couldn't sing, which while not every mer was extended from a line that could have or should have given their ancestry, he felt weird about it. So that meant he couldn't do magic.
The skinny, pale red head that was different from everyone else. Bleh.
So watching Katherine have to suffer through this barrage of commentary telling her about her life, who she was supposed to be or who she would become, the truth about a past she clearly hadn't been told before now...it was almost too much. And yet he couldn't look away until Lucy sent him a message. He had avoided doing so to give her space in case she responded badly to her mother suddenly being a teen younger than herself. He didn't want to burden her with his time if she was focused on family. Of course it was a relief and welcomed when she messaged, as he had spent his earlier morning looking for present bows. Then the notification of Katherine's post had popped up and all of his plans went down the drain. Until now.
He hoped she liked the present. It was not, in all technicality, for Lucy but it worked just the same. So he await for her, arms crossed comfortably on the ledge of the pool with his chin resting upon the back of his crossed wrists, a shiny blue ribbon simply resting nearby his left elbow while his phone hung out on the other side near the right, smile on his face. He could not wait to see her walk through that hall, heart so full. He loved that girl.
