The house could be very scary at night and Georgiana often had a hard time sleeping. Snuggling her favorite doll did help, but it still made noises and there just had to be monsters in the wardrobe, she knew it. She sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes, looking around the room. It looked really scary in the dark. She remembered what Fitz told her, though. The dark just made normal things look scary. But she wasn't allowed to light the candles by herself and she really was scared. So she decided to go try to find her brother instead. He could light the candles and show her that everything was okay.

She climbed out of the bed and grabbed her doll and then slowly made her way out of the bedroom. It all looked really different. That had to just be the dark, right? That had to be it. But there was supposed to be a hall outside her bedroom not another big room with couches and things. Now she was really scared.

"Fitz? Mommy? Daddy?" She looked around the room and then saw another door, going out into a hall that looked very much different from the one at home. Had she been taken? People sometimes did that when they wanted money from very rich men like her daddy. Maybe that's what happened. "Fitz? Mrs Reynolds? Hello?" She started to slowly walk down the hall calling after anyone that might be able to hear her.

Ashley hadn't been sleeping much since the accident so she was wide awake and sipping a glass of tea when Georgiana started yelling out in the hall. She put her tea down slowly and took a deep breath. Okay, Georgiana was little. She could handle this. She got up and made sure she had her robe on before going to the door and opening it slowly.

"Georgiana, sweetie. You'll wake everyone if you're not quiet, dear." She tried to keep her voice soft.

"Who are you? Where's my mommy? And where's Fitz?" She held her doll close to her chest.

"My name is Ashley. I'm a very good friend of your brother. He's right in here, but he's not feeling very well right now. He fell off his horse and got hurt. I'm sure he'd love to see you, though." She held out her hand to the little girl. Oh how was he actually going to handle this?

"How do I know you're not lying?" Georgiana gave her a defiant look. It was a very good question. Ashley cleared her throat.

"You can ask me anything you want. If I answer it correctly, will you believe me?" She smiled.

Georgiana nodded for a moment, then scratched her head as she thought about it. "How good a friend are you?" She tilted her head.

"Um....Fitz and I are actually engaged." Ashley held out her hand with the ring on it. It wasn't a custom back then but she didn't care. "He gave this to me."

Georgiana was momentarily distracted by the shiny ring. She walked over and took Ashley's hand, looking at it. "That's really pretty. Fitz didn't tell me he was getting married."

"We haven't told anybody yet." Not entirely true but she didn't know that.

"Oh." Georgiana looked down at her doll. "If Fitz is really in there, what's his horse's name?"

Ashley cleared her throat. Fuck, how long did horses live? She couldn't remember. "Well, the horse he fell off of is named Annie." She bit her lip.

Georgiana couldn't remember if that was right or not. They had a lot of horses and she couldn't remember all of their names sometimes. She decided that sounded right, though, and nodded. "Where's Fitz?" She took a hold of Ashley's hand.

Ashley led Georgiana into the living room and then smiled a bit. It was all the furniture from home so she wouldn't feel too out of place. "I need to go let him know that you're here, okay? Will you sit on the sofa for me for a few minutes?"

Georgiana nodded and then went over and climbed up onto the sofa, hugging her doll close again. Ashley took another deep breath and then headed back into the bedroom and over to sit on the side of the bed, gently shaking Fitz to wake him.

Darcy fought back a bit of a giggle as he suddenly remembered Mrs Winthrop. It hadn't seemed all that amusing at 18, but now he remembered how all of her dolls had rather formal names for a child's imagination. He liked the idea that there was a Mr Winthrop out there somewhere.

"Oh, thank you, Georgie. You are so very kind to me," he told her with genuine affection, and he did hold onto the doll for a moment.

He was glad that she seemed to find an explanation for their parents absence all by herself. "Yes, that's right. And lucky us, we don't have to see her. I can't go because of the accident, and they realised that they couldn't possibly leave me without my Nurse Georgiana to look after me, you see?"

Georgiana smiled when he took the doll. She would take good care of him.

"Yes, you do need your nurse." She giggled. She looked around at Ashley and then moved a little closer to the bed, whispering.

"Miss Ashley says you're getting married and you gave her that pretty ring." She still wasn't quite sure if she could believe everything she was told but he was definitely Fitz. That was all that really mattered.

	"Did she now? Well, Miss Ashley is quite correct," he whispered back to his little sister. "And you are very special because you are the first person to know our little secret," he added. 	Georgiana grinned. She never got to know any grown up secrets. It was very exciting. She looked over at Ashley as if studying her. She leaned in a little closer. "She's really pretty. And she seems nice." She looked at Ashley again, then back at her brother. "Do you think she would play tea party with me? That's very important." She tried to look serious. Darcy couldn't help but smile at his little sister's assessment of his fiance. "Yes, she is very pretty indeed, and wonderfully nice as well," he agreed with her. His own expression turned equally serious.

"Well, I happen to know for a fact that there is very little Miss Ashley should like more than to play tea parties. Especially with you, you have so many fine tea sets, and always such pleasant guests we have with us," he reminded her. "But you know, Miss Ashley comes all the way from America. You're going to have to use your very fine manners to teach her just how to behave at an English tea party. Oh! It can be practice for when mama and daddy come back, can't it?"

Georgiana grinned. "Yes. Mrs Haversham and Mrs Carrington will be very happy to have a new guest for tea." She giggled, then nodded enthusiastically.

"I can teach her so that she impresses mummy." She tilted her head. "Do they drink tea in America?"

Ashley stepped in this time. "We do drink tea but we drink it iced so I am completely hopeless when it comes to proper tea time." She smiled.

"I can teach you!" Georgiana smiled excitedly.

"Oh yes, I'll bet they will," he smiled. Oh, he'd forgotten how sweet Georgie was at this age. He'd missed a lot of it between boarding school and then university, and it was actually quite nice to get a little taste of it now. He did hope it wouldn't last too long though - mostly because they'd only be able to shield her from technology, and the fact they were in outer space, for so long.

"You will be an excellent teacher. We'll make a proper English lady of her in no time," he said, looking up a little to give Ashley a bit of a teasing look. "So good that even Lady Catherine won't have a bad word to say."

Georgiana made a face. "Aunt Catherine always has a bad word to say." She really did not like Aunt Catherine one bit. Georgiana looked at Ashley again. Before she could say anything, she yawned very big.

"I think we should try to get a little more sleep for right now." Ashley smiled. Seeing how he was with little Georgie just made her more confident that he was going to be an excellent father.

Georgiana nodded. "Can I stay in here? That other room is very scary." She pouted a bit.

Darcy couldn't help but laugh, even if it pained him to do so. There were some things that a child could just get away with saying, and it would still be adorable. "That's very true. Maybe we can play a silly trick on her next time," he suggested. They often did- nothing awful, nothing harmful, but the sort of thing that would have even their mother trying to keep a straight face as she lightly scolded their silliness.

"Of course you can, little sister," he assured her, reaching out to gently pat at her hair for a moment. He really wished he wasn't injured so that he could give her a reassuring cuddle, but he would have to settled for that.

Ashley smiled a little as she watched them. She realized what Georgiana was asking and moved to kneel down next to her.

"Georgiana, Fitz isn't quote up to cuddling right now because of his back. Would you like to come sleep with me in my room?" She was very thankful the other room was still made up.

Georgiana looked at Ashley and then looked at her brother. "Will you be okay with only Mrs Winthrop?"

Darcy was entirely grateful to Ashley in that moment. He supposed that growing up here, she had to be more used to this kind of strange turn of events. She'd had to learn to be adaptable. Still, he really appreciated her gentle kindness.

"Oh, yes my dear, I already feel much better now that she's here," he smiled. "Miss Ashley will take very good care of you, there's absolutely nothing to be scared of now," he assured the little girl.

	Georgiana nodded and shifted to give the doll a quick kiss. She whispered to the doll but loud enough that Fitz could hear. "Mrs Winthrop, I'm going to see if Miss Ashley will be a good mummy. You stay and take care of Fitz." She nodded and then smiled up at him. "We'll bring you tea in the morning when it's time to wake up." She nodded. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Darcy smiled right back at his little sister, and in that moment he was absolutely certain that she would find that Ashley was going to be a wonderful mother. He had absolutely no anxiety about letting little Georgie go with her now, and there were very few people in the world that he would've trusted her with.

"Thank you, dearest sister. Be good, now," he said softly. "Sleep well, ladies," he said a little louder so Ashley could hear too.

	Ashley smiled. "Georgie, I need to make sure he doesn't need anything. Will you wait for me in the living room?" The little girl nodded and then left the room. As soon as she was out, Ashley leaned down and gave her fiance a kiss. "You, my darling man, are going to be an absolutely excellent father." She kissed him again. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Darcy always, always loved a kiss from his fiance, but it felt extra sweet stolen in the candlelight in that moment. Once again, he was disappointed that he couldn't really do anything but lie there. Having a dislocated back was apparently very boring as well as very painful.

At her comment, however, he smiled into her kiss quite gleefully. "I certainly hope so. I think we will make a wonderful team, in fact," he told her happily.

	Darcy sighed happily at her lingering kiss, and then smiled at her. "One more kiss," he whispered his request. He'd been feeling a little needy and pining since the accident, but she was so good at making him feel loved and cared for. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)
