Before the mer locked themselves in at the Jedi Temple, for their safety of course, Cristiano wanted to pay one last visit to their land walking family. He would have preferred to do so out in the ocean on his own 'turf' so to speak, but this was just as good. Most of the time, he felt a bit like an outsider, as he could not choose when to go on land as Juliet once had. The situation felt different with her own rules having changed, but he felt no less at arms length from his soon to be in-laws. With all good intention, especially after the stir in the ocean, he thought it would be fun to hang out with Tom.

He carried with him up the tunnels to the pools a small net of twine a series of balls in various size for games. Cris swam quickly with powerful thrusts of his tail, mentally preparing himself to explain the game to Tom and trying to figure out how best to play with legs and feet instead of tail and fin. He slowed at the mouth of the pools and peeked in, unsure if he was early or late for their spontaneous meeting.

Tommy was already in the pool. He'd grabbed one of the Jedi rebreather things that let him stay underwater without needing all kinds of tanks or equipment, having learned a damn good lesson from the last time he'd gone swimming (or tried to, at least) and was using it. He was sitting on the pool floor, tucked in beside the ladder to get in and out of the pool, and was using it to keep himself from floating back up to the surface.

If he stayed under the water, it was quiet. It was calm. That was all he wanted. Maybe he could even try and sleep under the water.

Admittedly, Cristiano did not advise sleeping under the water when you weren't used to it. What if his mouth fell open off of the breather? What if he started to breathe through his nose instead of his mouth? He could drown! Cris didn't want that in the slightest. Of course, it was all relative and not yet even a conversation they'd had.

"Hi!" the merman said as he came nearer, setting the bag down. He coiled up his tail as he came to sit a few feet away from Tommy, running a hand through his hair to push the long brown stands away from his gaze. He needed a trim but also found he liked the longness. It went with his awesome beard.

Tommy looked up when Cris spoke and nodded his hello but otherwise didn't react. He'd agreed to the mer's company because doing otherwise would have been rude, but he really didn't want to play any games. At least the rebreather was in, so he wouldn't be expected to talk.

Hm. Maybe I should have listened to Juliet... Cris thought to himself as he shift on his tail and found a comfortable pose. Still, he wasn't about to not try just because Tommy wasn't in the best of moods. So he smiled and opened the bag.

"I brought you something," he said, because everyone loved gifts. Everyone. So by that logic, Tommy being part of the greater collective, he would like a gift, too. As he rummaged through the sports balls he pulled out a rather large conch with a grin and held it up to his ear.

"This, you will like! I found this in the Ostrokon. It's a place to collect conch knowledge, like where ever you keep books! Anyway, it has a recording from an ancient star follower. I thought you liked that kind of information so I picked it up on the way here." He then extended his arms to offer the conch. "You just listen to it--but you don't have to, now. Just...whenever."

True to his word, when held by the ear an older man's voice started to speak. He sounded excited if not fascinated by whatever in the sky he was looking at from just below the surface, describing how the stars on this night were no longer the same as the stars from two weeks prior, that they had in fact moved and now a red star could be seen that had not existed before. The conch would go on recording for about two hours before it stopped and began again.

Tommy reached for the conch, vaguely remembering chatting with Cora about conch shells on the network, and wondered if this worked by magic as well. He did as Cris showed him, and put the shell to his ear, and listened to the man's voice. Despite his mood, he found himself trying to work out what was going on, but then realized he was being rude to Cris.

How did he turn it off? He moved the shell round to see how it worked, before looking over to Cris. He put the shell to his ear, then pointed up. Would it work out of water? Then he put his hand over the opening. Could he stop the voice?

Cris wouldn't care less if Tommy was being rude as long as he seemed cheered up even for just a moment. He grinned while watching his friend's face, hoping for a bright look. "It just plays," he said. "If you lay it down it pauses. I've never used it on land but I assume it works. Why don't you give it a try?" He encouraged.

Tom nodded, and placed the shell down. The faint sound of the man's voice stopped, so that much worked. Then he picked it up again and the voice continued. Okay, cool. Then he pointed up to the surface and moved out from the ladder before letting himself float up to the surface, kicking every so often to stop himself drifting away from the side.

Once he broke the surface, he put the rebreather down at the side of the pool and listened. It was very faint, but he could just about make it out. He could probably listen to it in the bath if he wanted to hear it better. And then he'd be able to write it all down, too, so he could really work on it and find out what the red star was. A comet, maybe? But why would the other stars move? He'd have to work on it. He could finally get back to doing something.

Quietly, Cris followed with a smaller smile. Amused. Optimistic. He surfaced and float around on his back while his fin flit to keep him steady, arms stretched wide. He stared at the ceiling rather than watch Tommy. Finally, however, he couldn't stand it any more.

"Do you like it? There's a whole Ostrokon. I can bring you more, or you could come see...if you want."

"I like it. Thanks, Cris," he said, a very small smile twitching at the corner of his mouth. "I'd love to see the... Ostrokon? Is that right? Is it a library? It's just, I'm not that good at swimming right now."

There it was! Cris felt his mission was now a success. He tilt his head to the left to both look at Tommy and to breathe in the water around him. "Yeah, that's it! Glad you like it," he said. "The Ostrokon is massive and looks like the nautilus. Spirals down twelve floors, each one for a specific genre of work."

Cris' eyes flicked over Tommy as if guesstimating why he could not swim. He couldn't recall but didn't want to pry. "Well, I can take you any time you want, but I can bring you more, too." Leave it open. That sounded good.
