I'll bite and say that I only relatively recently identified myself as a fantasy writer. Odd, considering my most recent work consisted of vaguely Nordic mythology-retelling, a family cursed by their wayward son and a futuristic Soviet Union-esque dictatorship... I think I just have problems genre-ifying what I write!
I don't write straight fantasy - I prefer to write something based (however tenuously) on the real world. I'm fond of steampunk, and adding a supernatural twist to it is fun. And at other times I veer between science fiction and fantasy: in one story, for example, there are vampires and alchemy but there are also some more advanced scientific practices.
