Summary: Don has fallen in love.
Don had actually mentioned it.
The exchanging class rings in high-school, that was.
Charlie smiled, that was something Don had done but he hadn’t even really known about that tradition.
This time Charlie brought it up.
It was after the gay marriage issue, when marriage licenses were issued.
Charlie felt a little sad, even if gay marriage was allowed eventually, it wouldn’t help him and Don.
This time they both brought it up.
Don and Charlie both knew they had a relationship that was forever in hiding, but they really didn’t care.
What they wanted was something simple for each of them to know they were the others’.
Charlie had some time off of work due to Christmas break and Don had been able to snag a weekend off in one of the office holiday raffles.
They went out to dinner with their Dad, Alan had chuckled as his boys seemed more at ease than they had in a long time.
Maybe it was the holidays. Maybe it was just thankfulness for things in life. Maybe it was just them, them happy.
Charlie and Don headed off back home, a very un-expected snow storm making California quite chilly.
However, it made for the perfect Christmas scene.
Charlie and Don were quite grateful to be back inside after the chill of the outdoors.
Don had laughed at how Charlie’s hair was all speckled from the snow and Charlie had then shook his head and sprinkled Don with melting snow.
Charlie dashed upstairs, off to change into something warmer and Don wandered into the kitchen, looking for the cocoa he knew his father would always buy around the holidays.
Leaning against the counter, Don felt two small circles press against his skin through the pocket, reminding him.
Charlie bounded back down the stairs and curled up on the couch, covering himself with a quilt and letting out a small ‘brrrrr.’
Don came in, holding to mugs, he shook his head as he handed one mug to Charlie, “You can’t be that cold.”
Charlie just stuck out his tongue and made himself more comfortable, sipping slowly on the still warm cocoa.
Don sat down next to him and Charlie instantly curled into his shoulder, his hair still slightly damp from the melted snow.
He was content to sit for just a minute before setting his cocoa down and laying back, pulling Charlie more into his lap and resting his head on Charlie’s shoulder.
“You know, I have a Christmas gift for you.” Don murmured.
Charlie turned, a bright smile lighting up his face; Don loved how Christmas practically turned Charlie back into a child.
Don made Charlie scoot off his lap a little and turn to face him, Charlie was practically bouncing with excitement. “What is it?” He asked, repeatedly.
“Well, I can tell you that it isn’t anything too directly related to math. I don’t think. Also, it was something I had to give you on your own.”
Charlie had calmed and was now looking at Don as he started to speak again.
“You have to trust me here Charlie and you have to promise. You have to promise not to peek.”
Charlie nodded and closed his eyes.
Don reached in and pulled the two stainless steel rings from his pocket. He had talked with some of his gay friends, the few he had, and with their help had chosen two rings that could easily pass as ordinary rings to anyone but Charlie and himself.
Taking a deep breath he took Charlie’s hand, placed the ring in his palm, closed his hand; keeping it between his own.
“Okay. Open your eyes and look Charlie.”
Don watched nervously as Charlie opened his eyes, opened his hand, he saw the ring and looking up he locked eyes with Don.
“Charlie, I know that whatever happens, we will never get the chance to be together in public. I don’t really care though. The only important people are you and I.” Don paused, showing Charlie the ring in his hand, his ring. “But for you and I, I want us to know we have each other.”
Don could swear he saw Charlie fighting back tears as Charlie took the ring from Don’s hand and slid it onto his right-hand ring finger.
Don sniffed, fighting back tears of his own now as he took the ring from Charlie’s hand and did the same.
Charlie leaned in and kissed Don, a few tears rolling down his cheeks. “I love you, Don.”
Don raised his left hand, brushing away the tears, “I love you, Charlie.”
A few more kisses and Don laid back on the couch, Charlie snuggling into him as Don finished covering them with the quilt.
Charlie kissed Don’s cheek, “Mine.” He said sleepily.
Don kissed the top of Charlie’s head, “Yours.”
Alan came home later and found them asleep on the couch, same way they used to sleep as kids.
He smiled, his sons were happy, not sure why, but he hadn’t seen them this happy since before their mother died.
Alan left them and went upstairs to bed, failing to see the two small reasons his sons were so happy this Christmas.
