They have no good answer for that, except for the suggestion that the cops probably won't think to look for them in New Jersey, but —
"We can't do nothing. I can't do nothing." Their frustration at being useless makes them look miserable; their eyes are glassy and wet. It frightens them to think that people are, right this very minute, being hurt, and they're not there to stop it.
