In his current state of mind Michael is unfazed by the idea of Kevin’s dangerous touch. It’s unimportant. So is what he’s saying about his friend. All Michael hears is his assent, that he’s going and not staying; once that’s clear he approaches Kevin again, grabs his arm in a no-nonsense grip, and pulls him into the shadows.
When they reappear inside Lee’s shop, Michael lets go of Kevin right away. He’d never taken anyone else in there except for Lee. It feels surreal, all of it, the whole thing. Any moment they’ll stand up from behind the counter and say, What? Neshama, did you really believe that?
He wanders over and looks back there. Just in case.
