“I’ve never seen mountains,” says Michael. “Or been camping. What do you do when you camp? The way people talk it sounds like they spend most of the time putting up tents and then sleeping in them.”
He likes being outdoors—loves it—but has remained inside the city virtually his entire life. The rest of New York State is green and woodsy, and he knows plenty of his classmates growing up had gone camping or day-tripping in the country, but he had no one to go with. Morris was always an indoor type when it came to leisure; the longest he’d spend in nature was an afternoon playing chess in the park. (Michael got to go to the park a lot, at least.)
