Lee looks at the closed door for a long moment and is acutely aware that she fucked that up, though just 'very' and not 'disastrously' like she could have. (She did not, after all, start telling them about the warning she received from the birds earlier today about the rain — useless, anyway, she forgot to bring an umbrella.) She wishes fiercely that she understood how to navigate things like that. Why can't she just talk to people and have it come out sounding easy, natural? Everyone else does it.
She turns to look at Michael. Lee opens her mouth and for a moment there is the threat hanging in the air that she's about to apologise like she always does about everything. She closes her mouth and swallows that apology. Nope. Not today.
"I also come to tell you I can't see you tonight," she says. "I promise Rich I'll go to his gallery opening, I forgot about it." She has to figure something out with this, Lee is not reliable enough to work one place and live another, and she's been spending almost all of her time lately with Michael. It's absurd to feel guilty about that because her relationship with Rich isn't even a proper job and if he really wanted to employ her properly he would give her wages and hours and all that, but if she's not there when inspiration strikes, he gets upset, and sooner or later they're going to have a falling out and then she will have no job.
(Oh, so we're just going to pretend that didn't happen before? Okay, cool.)
