Michael feels Lee tense in his arms. Conversations haven't led to this very many times in his life, but whenever they have, people hate it. It scares them. He's not sure which is worse: that, or the pitying look he gets when he reassures them it's not true.
Lee had believed him, though. She hadn't given him that look. But she's still afraid now, and that makes him afraid.
“I was supposedly born there, that's... that's what he said. But that doesn't prove anything. Everyone knows that's not possible.”
