I cannot say whether reading the now committed to history letters of Her Majesty the Queen Victoria and HRH Prince Albert to and about each other is a good way to spend my free time but it at least has granted me a fair share of shock, wicked amusement and a little bit of scandal.

She does not sound in these letters and journals like the woman I met or the image she projects.

...Then again, now I think about it, nine children is quite a lot even for someone needing to produce heirs and spares. Definitely not "the bare minimum"...

I always liked the love story between Victoria and Albert, once we learned more about their lives. Our current Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have quite the love story as well. I think it's sweet.

The sheer passion she demonstrates leaves me in awe. Him, too. Also that they did not keep from having their quarrels but always came back to what was truly important. She is known for having a temper, being difficult, all those things, but all I keep reading makes me admire her despite it all.

Oh do they? I should like to read about that one as well, then.

I imagine it was hard, with men not taking her seriously. Besides, even in my time, a woman who's assertive, and standing up for her self can be described as "difficult" by some men. I quite imagine she was just asserting her authority as Queen, and their egos couldn't cope with it.

They do. He gave up his Greek and Danish titles, and line of sucession, to marry her. And, they wrote to each other for 7 years, until he finally asked the King for her hand.

She has quite a lot of male vultures and other types of noisy relentless birds around her, that is a fact. It must chafe that the last word was hers. Even the Prince Consort had trouble handling it, it seems.

It is sad that this hasn't changed so much further in the future. I imagine if I did not have my twin brother seemingly as an equal with whom to share leadership, I would have a lot more trouble as well.

Oh, that is quite a lot to give up! And she is the queen, and him the consort once again? Remarkable.

Men are not always good at handling strong women.

She also changed the rules, so that the eldest child is heir, regardless of gender.

At least I cannot fault my brother there. He disagrees with my methods but not because I am a woman, because he is a trampling bull in a crystal palace.

Oh that is brilliant! Well done her. Her Majesty Queen Victoria seemed by my reading quite cross at how her own eldest daughter couldn't rule. She and others felt she was much more qualified than her brother.

He sounds delightful.

That seems quite likely, considering history.

In my experience, people in positions of power cannot always be themselves in public.

You are right. Then again, in what appears to now be called Victorian England, few people can be themselves in public.

That sounds like an awfully stifling time.

It was. It is. To tell the truth I am quite taken aback by how different it all seems to be here and now.

On that, we can agree. This place is strange, and yet marvellous.

The way women behave with no consequences befalling them afterwards is like out of a reverie of mine.

It is wonderful to see. I have to say, I am glad I would not need to sneak around to spend time with women.

And yet, lest my reading betrays me, you've had your share of conquests. Have you been faring even better since arriving?

I'll be honest, I have been more concerned with figuring out this new age.

Nine? Maker's breath. Most Nevarran nobles would stop at three.

Nine! And not one of them died during infancy, which is a feat in and of itself.

According to private records, however, Her Majesty was not as keen on the pregnancies themselves than what prefaced them.

I cannot say I blame her! Pregnancy has never held any great appeal; the whole thing seems an utterly wretched experience. To go through it nine times beggars belief.

She sounds like a formidable woman.

Seeing as my own mother died in childbirth I am inclined to agree with your own stance on the very concept. Nine sounds ludicrous.

It seems nowadays there is a theory for what she and other women suffered after giving birth, an imbalance of the mind that could result in bitterness toward the child itself. Which also explains her slight contempt towards her children. But she is amazing, yes, in many ways.
