“Nearly everyone on Jakku was the same- a scavenger.” It almost sounded as if she was correcting him, her voice with a hint of a tense note to it, not quite ashamed. But there was a sense of not giving her any credit she wasn’t due. Out of survival, she was self-taught, as proud as she was of the speeder she’d built, it was part luck, and had only come from picking the scraps of the long dead starship graveyard.
And that’s all she felt, still, a scavenger. Especially around someone like Poe, an actual professional at what he did, someone just like those stories she’d grown up hearing, pretending to be a part of. It was a very different experience when she had been caught up it it all; facing Kylo Ren in combat, Leia sending her to bring Luke back? She felt stronger, but still wasn’t certain the Resistance had done the right thing, placing their faith in her.
Poe was to lead a team, he’d said, and Rey tried to smile a touch, because even from the way he seemed to hold himself, he looked like someone capable. “I’ve heard there’s missions-” Rey said, thoughtfully. “I’m not sure what they’re for- but maybe understanding what this war is all about, what we’re supposed to be facing.” Her brows creased, she hadn’t forgotten he’d said the fighting back home was done, over. So Rey said something before she thought the better of it. "I'm sorry they brought you into this- but, everyone's saying we need people like you."
